Question:

: Not all birds like fruit or veggies.  One tiel of ours refused to eat any : whatsoever.  Try to encourage her (you eating it in front of her is : good).  But don’t get concerned if she just isn’t into it.  As for every : day – well, that would be ideal, but…  If she eats some fruit/veggies a : few times a week – she’ll be a happy, healthly birdie.  Also, give her some : meat from time to time.  Chicken, pork, steak – all that’s good for : them.  Just make sure it’s properly cooked and not spiced.  (I.e., if you : salt and peppered your steak – cut a small, bird sized piece for her and : then suck off the spices in your mouth and then give it to her.)   No, no!  Human saliva has a lot of nasty things in it that can hurt a bird. We carry bacteria that birds can’t handle very well.  You can be lucky for a while, but all it takes is an increase in something like E. coli and your bird can get live-theatenly sick. : As for her sucking the juice out of peas and corn – that’s ok.  One of : tiels does that.  He LOVES peas and lima beans.  He eats the meat and : leaves tons of "skins"!  So keep feeding her the corn and peas – sounds : like she likes them. Yes, a lot of our tiels do this.  Or they make *lace* out of the veggies, picking out the choicest parts, I suppose. Laura This message what this message is is.

: My ‘tiel, Taylor, yawns A LOT.  Sometimes she will yawn 5 or 6 times in a : row.  Is this normal or should I be concerned?  Other than this she seems : to be healthy.  She plays around and does her business. Don’t worry about the yawning.  What she is probably doing is trying to unblock her ears.  When she "yawns" that often in a row, does she also shake her head back and forth?  Just as our ears will plug up when we have an air pressure change – so will birds.  They have it a lot more than we do though.  One of my tiels does this a lot – it’s enough to drive you nuts if she’s sitting on your shoulder at the time! :) What can you do to help?  Pick her up and try to rub her head around her ears and under her lower beak.  She’ll probably only let you get in a couple of good rubs on the ears before she gets annoyed.  Put her down and see if that cleared her ears.  If not, try a couple more times.   That’s all you can do.  It doesn’t hurt her to have her ears plugged it just bugs her (just like us). : Another question I have concerns fruits and vegitables.  Everybody says it : is important to feed these every day.  HOwever, Taylor does not seen to : like them.  She will suck all the juice out of boiled corn and sometimes : peas.  Occasionally she will pick at brocolli or a grape, but she doesn’t : seem to be very interested otherwise.  I have tried to eat what ever the : new piece of food is in front of her.  She will see me and decide ‘hmm : maybe I will try that.’  She takes a nibble and then goes off to chew on : one of her sticks or will shake her head vigorously to, I guess, eliminate : the taste in her mouth. Plus, you can sprinkle some vitamins over her fruit and veggies from time to time as a boost.  "Nekton Bio" is an excellent one if you can find it.  "Prime" is also very good.  I prefer putting vitamins on their fruit/veggies, as opposed to their water, as some birds will dehydrate themselves before they touch yellow water! (Can’t blame them.) Hope this helps. Yours in Tieldom, Gisela

Hi, yawning is usually a sign of a sinus infection, if repeated often and for several days.  Birds entire head and beak are filled with sinus cavities.  It could also be something stuck in the roof of her mouth…I suggest you get him to the doc for a look see…. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> Another question I have concerns fruits and vegitables.  Everybody says it > is important to feed these every day.  HOwever, Taylor does not seen to > like them.  She will suck all the juice out of boiled corn and sometimes > peas.  Occasionally she will pick at brocolli or a grape, but she doesn’t > seem to be very interested otherwise.  I have tried to eat what ever the > new piece of food is in front of her.  She will see me and decide ‘hmm > maybe I will try that.’  She takes a nibble and then goes off to chew on > one of her sticks or will shake her head vigorously to, I guess, eliminate > the taste in her mouth. > Any ideas would be welcome, particularly about her yawning. > Thanks in advance.

As for the veggies, try fresh instead of boiled, or try frozen just warmed up.  My birds love the vegies warmed up.   Tiels aren’t always big veggie eaters, however, if you have them on a pelleted diet, the few vegies she does eat may just be enough……whatever THAT is… :-) ;-) Bambi :-) . —     408-761-0566  Layaway/Payment Plans Avail.: 29 Species of Parrots:  (8)Amazons,(8)Conures,(5)Cockatoos,(3)Macaws,(2)Pionus,CAGs,Princess,Meyers
