Wireless Internet access for travelers

Question:

There is an online resource for travelers, both business and recreational, that allows them to compare and purchase pre-paid wireless Internet access plans(otherwise known as "wi-fi").  These plans provide affordable Internet access with your laptop or PDA at wireless "hotspots" located in hotels, airports, cafes, and other public access areas throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Asia. The resource is called WiFiMinutes and is located at http://www.wifiminutes.com.  When you order a pre-paid plan through WiFiMinutes.com you will receive your access code immediately within your web browser and also to your email address, so you will be able to logon immediately at your next visit to a wi-fi location.

If you choose to use this kind of service, make sure that all communication is encrypted. It is very easy for someone to ’snoop’ on all your traffic, including passwords. — http://www.dissensoftware.com

It’s equally trivial on any fixed wire connection, if you have any passwords worth anything, use a secure communication method. Oh and OP don’t hugely cross-post adverts… Jim.

So you suggest people trust internet cafe cables or PC’s with their passwords but wifi is a whole order of magnitude different? >Open Wifi is trivially easy to snoop on.

Yes, but like most things it’s rarely worth the trouble (unless you’re at a conference when snooping out all the jpegs being downloaded can reveal interesting things about the amount of people who are browsing for porn in the middle of all those boring lectures) I’m simply suggesting that if you’re anywhere and have anything to lose with your stuff that is leaving your machine – use a secure communications protocol, wifi is nothing special! Jim.

Certainly not open PC’s. that is just asking for trouble. The more ways you have to connect to the Internet, the more way’s you have for someone to compromise your system and data. It’s just a good idea to run something like VPN or HTTPS whenever there’s any value to what you are doing and always keep your firewall enabled when online. — Donald Newcomb DRNewcomb (at) attglobal (dot) net
