South African Airway 747 upstairs seats
Question:
Hi all, A friend and I will be flying the Loooong flight from JFK to Jo’burg on South African Airways, we have seats on the "upper deck" in row 80, the agent said the upper deck is roomier than below. I just wanted to see if anyone here had an opinion on that? Also are there individual seat monitors and movie choices, or just overhead monitors? TIA, Nancy
Response:
I can’t confirm that the upstairs is roomier, although it is significantly quieter and more pleasant than "cattle class" downstairs. As far as I know, the 747’s that fly between JFK and JNB are the older ones with overhead monitors, or perhaps it’s just my bad luck that I keep getting the older planes…
SAA have a website at www.flysaa.com where you can view the seat layouts etc. Regards, Marc – Johannesburg, South Africa – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >Hi all, >A friend and I will be flying the Loooong flight from JFK to Jo’burg on >South African Airways, we have seats on the "upper deck" in row 80, the >agent said the upper deck is roomier than below. Nancy, Lucky you! Upstairs coach seating is probably the next best thing to flying business class! I have flown that way a few years back on SAA and loved it. The upstairs cabin are much less noisy because they are so far from the engines, and besides because it is so much smaller than downstairs main coach section, the whole atmosphere doesn’t feel half as cramped. When I travelled with them there weren’t any personal tv screens, but it seems they have fitted all their 747 aircraft with such equipment since. Also, make sure you get a window seat as there is an extra baggage compartment between the window seat and the window itself, which means extra storage space. You can also leave some stuff on top of this "cabinet": extremely handy! For more info, check their website www.saa.co.za where you can view seat plans, check out which movies will be available, etc. Have a nice trip! The last time I flew upper deck on SAA, there was no individual monitors or movie choices – it was overhead. The seating was better though with more leg-space and easier access. It was on the JFK- Joburg flight. Enjoy Africa Koos — Experiencing Africa’s horizons. http://www.new.co.za/~safari

I took this flight about a year ago. It is much roomier in the upper level and yes each seat had an individual console. The flight was much more enjoyable up there than in the lower area on my return flight.
