Releasing agency

Question:

>Without any effort I went to NCL’s website (like this guy shoulda done) and >found a week on the Norway at $499

OK, now we’re getting someplace. What sail date and what cabin category? Then we’ll be able to see what travel agents are quoting!!! I’m with you Paul. As soon as we can present some credible evidence that the client can get a better deal by booking directly I’ll be here every day shouting to the roof tops that the TAs are screwing them. Let’s prove the TA scam. Sail date and cabin category is all we need to shut them up for good. Travel Protection Services http://www.travelproservices.com

No, Gretch.  Slimeski, otherwise known here as Bottom of the Water Closet (or that slimy brown stuff), who pretends to run "Outhouse Travel, an appropriate name for him, can’t seem to fathom that travel agents will take over direct cruise line bookings and rebate part of the built in commission. He books direct and thinks that he’s getting a deal.  We have tried and tried to make him understand simple economics, but, quite frankly, he’s pretty much simple-minded, and can’t comprehend. He pays more than you did to book direct, and then tries to insult you.  He isn’t even bright enough to follow threads, or to ascertain gender from names. Just ignore him, like most of us do.  We only jump in when he insults the newer posters with his senseless drivel.  Otherwise, we find it amusing that he pays more than we do to cruise. Diane

Response:

no, she got a small discount over what NCL quoted her and turned the booking over to him.  NOT that she got a small discount off brochure rate I bet most of the TA’s online would take whatever quote you got from NCL’s website and give you a better deal — Sheree

Thanks to all who responded here and by personal email. Let me just say that I did get a small discount on our cabin and none on the second so I wouldn’t mind paying the difference. He said he would release it when I emailed him my concerns but I guess I wonder why he wouldn’t offer to get the cabin decorating done for me, he has my credit card? It seems that he would prefer losing my business even though when I had him take over the booking a couple months ago, I also asked him to keep an eye out for another one we want to take in November so he knows there is more $$ to be made. I am very confused by the whole thing. I don’t necessarily want to dump the agency because I feel I made an agreement with him but I want him to earn his money.

Response:

You misunderstand, I have no love for TA’s or anyone else ripping someone off.  But, your quite personal attacks on all the TA’s that participate here are out of line.  I’ve seen NO comments about any of the TA’s that are regular participants that were negative.   I take that back, som have complained about John Szeto, but not about him ripping anyone off. If you backed off that one, or provided proof that some here have indeed ripped someone off, then you would have credibility in that arena.  As it is, you don’t. Your answer to this guy could have been worded in a constructive manner and not the usual, very negative manner that you did. And another thing, the postings about the TA screwups and screws are almost always online type agencies with no or little personal contact with the client.  Buying on the internet is very much a buyer beware type of thing. My experience with Travel Agents has always been very positive.  Honest people, doing a good days work and taking the effort of my travel plans off of me. BTW, I’m not mad at you, I don’t take usenet conversations nearly that personal. Is it possible to get a travel agent to release the booking back to the cruise line? I want to call NCL to check on a paid upgrade like I did last time and also order a cabin decorating package but since I have an agency, they won’t talk to me and the travel agent only quotes me the same price for an upgrade that is on the site and gives me a number of someone he uses for a bon voyage gift. We got a small discount on one cabin from him and none on the other, I booked them online and he took over the booking so I am not sure why I even used him. Please don’t jump all over me, I want this cruise to be special but thus far haven’t gotten any assistance from the agent, in fact he won’t even return my emails. I thought if I called NCL directly about upgrading both cabins, I might be able to get a deal, I know they is no guarantee of that but it doesn’t hurt to ask and I can’t do the asking now. I am very frustrated. Thanks for any advise. Private emails are great too.

Far from jumping all over you — you have my sympathy.  This has happened to me, only worse: getting a TA who not only does just about nothing except take your money, but also screws things up. Don’t get me wrong.  If that is all that needs to be done, I am happy to give a good TA a profitable booking with very little work.   Personally, I have had better luck with smaller outfits and it’s worth a few extra bucks, to me, to get someone who will try to be helpful. I’m a little curious why the cruise line will not assist you.  It’s your booking.  It’s not like you are asking another agent to assist you with a booking that was done via someone else. But regardless of that, if you don’t want the agent working with it any longer just tell them and advise them in writing to please release the booking back to the Cruise line so you can deal with things yourself.  (be careful they don’t cancel it).  I would recommend going to a supervisor at the cruise line and seeing if they can help. Re the upgrade, I guess the agent maybe quoting you what the cruise line quoted them.  thats what I would end up doing, I’m not sure even the cruise line would give you a deal to upgrade 2 cabins.  but it is your choice to call the cruise line direct. I’m not sure why they agent would send you to someone else to do the Room Decorating.  This should ordered by the agent via the cruise line direct, you may have to give your credit card to do it, but that should be a problem. Gretch, as a consumer you have a right to expect a level of service from your TA that you are happy with.  If I were in your position, I would call your agent on the phone, tell him/her exactly what you want and what you expect…. and if he/she is unwilling to provide you with the service you desire, ask them to release the booking back to NCL.  If they refuse, call NCL and ask to speak to a supervisor… be polite but firm and don’t take "no" for an answer.  If one person can’t help you, ask to speak to their supervisor. If you are persistant and insistant, someone may be able to help you. You will lose whatever discount the TA offered, but if I read your letter right, this isn’t much of a concern to you. Travel agents are just like any other service provider… there are good ones and bad ones.  Sorry you are not happy with yours. — George in PA Countryside Travel www.countryside-travel.com

Response:

This is a typical Travel Agent scam.  Your Travel Agent charged you as much as he thought he could get away with.  Since  he’s already collected his commission, you’re at his mercy.  You can try to confront him, but in reality your stuck.  Your TA knows that there’s not much you can do The reason Cruise Lines won’t talk to you if you book via a TA is because they legally can’t — the TAs want it that way.  TAs are afraid that if passengers talk directly to the Cruise Line they may find out what the TA’s real fee was and realize how badly they’ve been scammed.  Additionally, TAs are afraid that once talk to the cruise lines and realize how easy direct booking is and that they can obtain the same or better rates, plus better service, TAs are out of business. Here are a few things to try:     Assuming you paid by Credit Card, you can dispute the charge.  American Express is especially good about aiding it’s card members     Try Small Claims court or Consumer Affairs, but that only works if he’s local  You’ll probably find a litany of judgments and complaints against him.     Contact the Better Business Bureau and the TA’s local Chamber of Commerce, but the chances of success there are slim — most Cruise Travel Agents are not members of the BBB or CofC because they refuse to conform to their code of ethics. I’m afraid, though, that like the majority of other cruisers victimized by Travel Agents, you’ll just have to chalk this one up.  Just learn from it and next time book direct with the Cruise Line.  They’re honest, provide better information, better prices, immediate answers to your questions, tell you about any unlisted specials and book you for the best price right there. Good luck Paul

Hi Paul, Have you come up with the names of a cruise line that undercuts agents and some agencies that charge more than the cruise lines yet? I’m eager to start phoning and getting comparison rates to help you prove your theory. I’ve got some time to spare tomorrow so if you’ll post the info I’ll get started right on it. What the heck, the sooner we can provide verifiable evidence of what is really going on out there the sooner cruisers can start saving money. Remember, what I’ll need is: Ship, sail date, cabin category. Be sure to pick a cruise line that you KNOW charges less on direct bookings. Names/phone numbers of five travel agencies that you KNOW charge consumers more that what they’d pay by booking direct with the cruise line. To BOTW, Get a real life, you sound like a complete idiot.  I would not mind so much except, some people may really believe you.  I guess you are around 10 or 11 years old thats how you sound. I know there are some 10 or 11 year old who are so much smarter then you.     SORRY Guys.

Response:

Hi whoever you are, It’s interesting the way you put it.  Cruise Lines are undercutting Agents. Not Agents overcharging customers. Had Gretch contacted NCL directly he would not have been quoted the brochure price or anything close to it.  He was scammed, now he’s stuck and you know it. Of course since you’re another one the hundred or so cruse travel wanna-be entrepreneurs whose only business model is to plaster this newsgroup with a website every chance they get for free advertising, I don’t expect you to admit that — you have a moral obligation to protect your fellow parasites. Well, I’m not a TA and you keep this claim going that you can always beat the TA’s.  So, how about a little proof?  On usenet, anyone can claim anything, but proving it is where the meat is.  You’ve made the claim, ad nauseum, so now provide the proof. Lloyd

OK Lloyd, Without any effort I went to NCL’s website (like this guy shoulda done) and found a week on the Norway at $499.  I didn’t even call to ask about other non-advertised specials or Email specials cause this price is less than 1/2 brochure and poor Gretch paid brochure on one cabin and a small discount on the other.  Ergo here is proof that had Gretch booked direct instead of being scammed by the Travel Agent he would have saved a lot of money. By the way Lloyd, why are you mad at me cause a Travel Agent ripped this guy off and now won’t talk to him?  Where’s your outrage at the Travel Agents who regularly do this?  Why’s it my fault that people post their Cruise Travel Agent horror stories here with more and more frequency and offer options? Try offering this guy some help instead of bitching at me and trying to protect the guy that screwed him? Paul

Diane

no, she got a small discount over what NCL quoted her and turned the booking over to him.  NOT that she got a small discount off brochure rate I bet most of the TA’s online would take whatever quote you got from NCL’s website and give you a better deal — Sheree
