obese 11 year-old interested in low-carb diet
Question:
My little sister has watched my husband and me lose about 50 lbs.each on the Atkins Diet. She is interested in losing weight, managing hypoglycemia, asthma, and severe allergies, and getting off as many medicines as she can. Where might I find more information on a low-carb diet suitable for a girl her age?

I don’t know what would be different in a lowcarb diet for that age, as a "normal" diet is no different for that age. But you can also subscribe and ask on the Atkins mailing list. It has 300 subscribers. To join, put in a message body SUB ATKINS-NEW your_full_name and send to Then there is the Paleolithic diet choice. To see more on this option you can visit: The Paleolithic Diet Page: http://www.panix.com/~paleodiet/ There is also a mailing for this diet. Subscribe as above but change to PALEOFOOD. As a personal trainer and someone who has worked with individuals of all ages I would like to offer some ideas. A girl her age is on the threshold of great hormonal changes. I’m not sure this is the best time for a diet. Her body is going to need all the stability and correct nourishmen it can get to see her through puberty. To make this an even easier transition , and to give her a good start in beginning a healthy, active lifestyle, I would suggest getting her in an exercise program. There is a new movement in the fitness business these days targeting kids and teens. The obesity rates for this age group is growing at an uncomfortable rate. To try and break that cycle fitness professionals are designing programs to reach kids are becoming sedentary at a much too early age. Maybe the whole family can start a power walking program. From there, start jogging or maybe even running. How about biking? Swimming? Many gyms now have family plans. Power walking for 30 minutes a day, gradually working up to 45 minutes will help her lose the weight. Remember losing 1-2 lbs. a week is recommended. Exercise, I feel, is the best way to lose weight and keep it off, plus getting all the other wonderful benefits of movement: feeling better, looking better, better circulation, balance, flexibility, less stress, etc. Cheers, Dolores Neese A.C.E.
