NY Celebrity cruise

Thanks for the responses.  The cruise is in June 2002.   I might have a car come for us or we’ll drive.  If I have a car pick us up it might be quicker . – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >Assuming things back to normal next season, the probability is that you >will be off the ship by 10:00 or so. >The probability of getting a cab… that’s a bit more dependent.  Not on >you or your ship, but on whether there is a Carnival ship in port with >you on the same day.  The 1500 people off your ship and the other >Celebrity ship will be one thing.  But if there are another 3600 people >getting off a Carnival ship that same day, at the same time, it will be >a nightmare getting a taxi.  First off, the Carnival ship docks further >north – in the direction that the cabs come from.  So most stop there >first.  Less cabs make it down to the Zenith/Horizon. >When we sailed the Destiny 2 summers ago, we waited about 2 hours in >line for a taxi. >You just might want to think about driving yourself.  There is a lot of >parking up on the roof of the terminals. >But I wouldn’t expect to leave the dock area before noon. >–Tom >Can anyone tell me what time I can expect to get off the ship in NY and >be on my way (cab) back to CT.     My son informs me today that he has >to be somewhere on the Saturday we return and needs to know the timing. > Teenagers make life so difficult.

As none of the ships are coming into New York right now I wouldn’t expect to get off the ship there at all.  If your cruise is after they start using the port again, I would expect you to be off by 9 or so, but you should consider a car service back home, it would cost about the same, and would be much easier to obtain then a cab at the piers.  If your mail is like mine (I live in Norwalk) there are two or three ads for car services in those weekly coupon mailers you get.

Of course no one is truly sure what the NY 2002 season will be about yet but if you would like to see some information regarding pier parking and taking your own car  http://users.bestweb.net/~travel1/pierpark.htm . This is a piece I update every year at the start of the NY cruise season and will give you some idea how convenient it is to drive and park, at least it has been in the past. I have been doing it for 7 years, never had a problem. It was easier than doing it in Baltimore this year although Baltimore wasn’t all that bad and certainly cheaper per day. I talked to my DSM today and he said yes they will go out of NYC  in 2002 and that the port was not being used now for ground Zero, they built a silver building near the port and that is what they are using down by the piers.. Adventure of the Seas went out of there, the first ship to sail from NYC since that time When they passed ground zero, they unfurled a HUGE flag on one side of the ship, the Godparents ( 4) were  family of 4 that had passed, Firefighters and Police officers.. — Susette Whitfield-ACC www.cruiseoutlets.com – A Vacation.com agency (800) 853-9515

Response:

Sue, I’m afraid your DSM is mis-informed. The OEM (Office of Emergency Mgmt) and FEMA are still using Piers 90 & 92 and will be for the foreseeable future and the Family Center is located on Pier 94. The AOTS was allowed to use Berth 1, Pier 88 only through special negotiations with the city. Berths 2, 3, 4 and 5 are still cordoned off with barges so that no traffic gets into the slips and is heavily guarded by the USCG and National Guard. That’s not to say that the port won’t re-open for the spring/summer/fall season 2002 but there still has been no firm answer as to whether the QE2 will be able to embark World Cruise pax from NYC in January. They may still be forced to use Boston. Your DSM should contact the mayor and tell him of this, as the city obviously has no knowledge of it as they are still using the piers, and the area is still all blocked off, the piers are blocked with barges. Obviously the city doesn’t know as much as the DSM. I wouldn’t trust any information that came from any other source then the city of New York on this one, as it’s up to them as to when they will leave the buildings, and when they will open those piers up again, and when they feel it is safe to have cruise ships back in town.  I seriously doubt it will ever happen if the family assistance center is still open. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> I talked to my DSM today and he said yes they will go out of NYC  in 2002 > and that the port was not being used now for ground Zero, they built a > silver building near the port and that is what they are using down by the > piers.. > Adventure of the Seas went out of there, the first ship to sail from NYC > since that time > When they passed ground zero, they unfurled a HUGE flag on one side of the > ship, > the Godparents ( 4) were  family of 4 that had passed, Firefighters and > Police officers.. > — > Susette Whitfield-ACC > www.cruiseoutlets.com – A Vacation.com agency > (800) 853-9515

Can anyone tell me what time I can expect to get off the ship in NY and be on my way (cab) back to CT.     My son informs me today that he has to be somewhere on the Saturday we return and needs to know the timing.  Teenagers make life so difficult.

Response:

I assume you are talking about a Bermuda cruise next summer? If that is the case I do not think there is an answer. At this point I do not even know if the Port of New York will be open to cruise ships. sue – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Can anyone tell me what time I can expect to get off the ship in NY and > be on my way (cab) back to CT.     My son informs me today that he has > to be somewhere on the Saturday we return and needs to know the timing. >  Teenagers make life so difficult.

Response:

Assuming things back to normal next season, the probability is that you will be off the ship by 10:00 or so. The probability of getting a cab… that’s a bit more dependent.  Not on you or your ship, but on whether there is a Carnival ship in port with you on the same day.  The 1500 people off your ship and the other Celebrity ship will be one thing.  But if there are another 3600 people getting off a Carnival ship that same day, at the same time, it will be a nightmare getting a taxi.  First off, the Carnival ship docks further north – in the direction that the cabs come from.  So most stop there first.  Less cabs make it down to the Zenith/Horizon. When we sailed the Destiny 2 summers ago, we waited about 2 hours in line for a taxi. You just might want to think about driving yourself.  There is a lot of parking up on the roof of the terminals. But I wouldn’t expect to leave the dock area before noon. –Tom – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Can anyone tell me what time I can expect to get off the ship in NY and > be on my way (cab) back to CT.     My son informs me today that he has > to be somewhere on the Saturday we return and needs to know the timing. >  Teenagers make life so difficult.

The parking is very convenient and safe.
