MINIVAN ABS PROBLEMS

Question:

The bigger point, which you are missing, is how poorly CC handles its problems.  Instead of stepping up to the plate and doing the decent thing they duck and run and especially in the case of ABS, they put peoples lives in danger for no reason other than corporate greed.  By the way I have a 92 Grand Caravan that has had numerous ABS problems, and has gone through 6 transmissions (three dealer rebuilds and three factory remanufactured) besides many other problems that are too numerous to mention. It has also been repainted.  Regardless of CC advertising, it will be a very long time before I would recommend anyone purchasing another CC product. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->I and a few folks I work with, folks just starting new families, were >leaning toward the CC Lxi mini-vans. I would caution you to the fact that a lot of people come to this newsgroup for the purpose of complaining and what you read here is probably not representative of owners in general. TO ANYONE WHO OWNS OR PLANS TO BUY A CHRYSLER MINIVAN.  LET ME TELL YOU MY EXPERIENCE WITH CHRYSLER CORPORATION.  I BOUGHT A PLYMOUTH GRAND VOYAGER LE SEPTEMBER 1991.  DECEMBER 1991 I HAD AN ACCIDENT WHEN THE VAN DID NOT STOP IN TIME. EARLY 1992 CHRYSLER ISSUED A SAFETY RECALL FOR "ANTILOCK BRAKE SYSTEM HIGH PRESSURE HOSE AND PUMP".  ACCORDING TO THE NHTSA 80,000 VOYAGERS BUILT FROM MAR 90 THROUGH JUL 91 AND 10,492 BUILT FROM JUNE 91 THROUGH JULY 91 WERE INCLUDED IN CAMPAIGNS 526 AND 527.  OUR VAN WAS INCLUDED IN THIS RECALL AND THE ABS WAS REPAIRED.   FEBRUARY 2, 1993 AS MY WIFE WAS COMING OUT OF AN X-WAY THE BRAKE AND ABS LIGHTS CAME ON AND THE BRAKES BECAME VERY HARD AND MY WIFE ALMOST HAD AN ACCIDENT.  THE ABS PUMP AND OTHER COMPONENTS WERE REPLACED AGAIN. A WEEK LATER THE SAME OCCURRED, BUT THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH IT. HOWEVER, THE SYSTEM BEGAN TO MAKE A LOW HUMMING SOUND AS IF A SMALL PUMP WAS RUNNING.  THE SOUND WOULD GO ON FOR SOME MINUTES AND THEN IT WOULD GO OFF.   ON JANUARY 1995 WE HAD ANOTHER FAILURE — ALL WHEELS LOCKED AND THE VAN HAD TO BE CARRIED BACK TO THE DEALER.  FIRST THEY REPLACED THE ABS PUMP — THE PROBLEM PERSISTED. NEXT THEY REPLACED THE CALIPERS AND PADS — STILL GOING.  FINALLY THEY REPLACED THE WHOLE HYDRAULIC SYSTEM — $2040. I ASKED FOR THE DEFECTIVE ABS PUMP — THEY REFUSED TO GIVE IT TO ME — FINALLY THEY SAID THEY WOULD GIVE TO ME FOR $450 — I TOLD THEM TO TAKE THEIR PUMP AND … THE ABS CONTINUED TO WORK UNTIL MAY 13, 1997 WHEN THE ABS HAD ANOTHER FAILURE.  THE ABS PUMP WAS REPLACED AGAIN UNDER THE LAST RECALL.  TWO WEEKS LATER THE BRAKE AND ABS LIGHTS CAME ON AND WE ARE BACK TO THE DEALER.  THEY SAID THAT MY WIFE LEFT THE EMERGENCY BRAKE ENGAGED — $200+ LATER THE VAN IS BACK AT HOME. I HAVE OWNED MANY CARS OVER THE PAST 30 YEARS — THIS IS THE WORST EXPERIENCE I EVER HAD.  I HAVE WRITTEN MANY LETTERS TO MR. LUTZ PRESIDENT OF CC.  THE LAST LETTER I COPIED THE CHAIRMAN, VICE-CHAIR AND OTHERS AT CC — NOT ONE RESPONDED.  CHRYSLER OFFICERS ARE NOT RESPONSIVE AND SHOW LITTLE OR NO CONCERN.   TO HAVE THEM BACK UP THEIR PRODUCTS REQUIRE GREAT EFFORT FROM THE SIDE OF THE CONSUMER. I WILL NEVER BUY A CHRYSLER PRODUCT AGAIN.  ALL MY FRIENDS KNOW ABOUT MY EXPERIENCE.  THE TWENTY PERSONS WHO WORK WITH ME KNOW.   MANY BUSINESS ASSOCIATES KNOW.  PEOPLE IN MY CHURCH KNOW.  MEMBERS OF MY ROTARY CLUB KNOW.  MEMBERS OF MY PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATIONS KNOW.  NOW YOU ALSO KNOW… SPREAD THE WORD AND MAYBE SOME DAY WE CAN MAKE CHRYSLER CARE. IF YOU HAVE HAD SIMILAR PROBLEMS LET ME KNOW.  I THINK THE MEDIA MAY BE READY TO HEAR ABOUT OUR PLIGHT. CARLOS RUIZ

I had the same concern and did extensive investigation before buying my 1997 T&C LXi.  Now 2 of my best friends also bought the same van. . . we look like some kind of over-the-hill bikers club when we all go somewhere together. I found several design people at Chrysler on the net (promised not to share their names).  The ABS system is completely redesigned and is actually the same system as used by several other companies — Ford to name one.  The early 1991-3 versions were terrible and caused alot of problems.  In the complete redesign for the 1996-7 Van everything was redone.  I waited one year to make sure that I had data on the new van before buying. The T&C Lxi is great.  My kids love it, I love it (use it as my car).  I get 18-20 Mpg in mixed driving and got over 24 on a trip to the mountains. Two recommendations.  1) get the towing kit.  That adds a cooler for the tranny, and HD everything to the electrical and cooling system. 2) Don’t let the dealer sell you any kind of paint plate, etc.  Get it done later and save hundreds of $$$.  Only pay for things put on at the factory! Any questions, feel free to email me.

I would caution you to the fact that a lot of people come to this newsgroup for the purpose of complaining and what you read here is probably not representative of owners in general. Make sure you speak with people who have *not* had these problems with Chrysler vans and with those who *have* had problems with other brands. (I am one of those people). Also, note that  the new Chrysler mini vans do not use the same Bendix ABS system (which was also used by GM during the same time period). Regards,
