Bob, Just returned from a wonderful week in Tuscany.  We stayed in a 3 bedroom farmhouse outside of Cortona.  The house was beautiful and the setting lovely, with views of the buildings of Cortona climbing the side of the steep hill..  We were located in a borgo (group of houses, not quite a village) next-door to an Italian family’s property, complete with their roosters, chickens, cute son and doting "nonna".  We were wonderfully situated to visit Florence, Arezzo, Siena and what were my favorites—Montalcino, Pienza, Montepulciano and the must-see Abbey Sant’Antimo 10 km south of Montalcino, in a picture-perfect isolated Tuscan setting.  We heard the Benedictine monks’ Gregorian chant service and you could hear the sound of their wonderful voices literally bounce off of the pink alabaster "singing stone".  Cortona itself is a stunning hilltown that lends itself to dramatic views to the valley below, leisurely walks thru its piazzas, visits to its Etruscan museum, many churches, wonderful and inexpensive restaurants and gelato on the steps in the Piazza Republica during the evening ‘passegiata’. Upon our arrival at Azienda Fontelunga, late Saturday evening we were served a multi-course Tuscan dinner/feast prepared by Mama Donatello whose son Michele runs the family business.  They own 5 farmhouses that, for now, are all stand-alone, independent facilities, not separated into apartments as is very common.  They were wonderful hosts and I would return there in a second.  The cost for this 3 BR, 2 full bath, lovely decorated house was 1,160,000 Lira for the week—approx $570.00. The owners have plans to package a farmhouse stay with hands-on cooking lessons and the subsequent dinners.  Visit www.emmeti.it and follow links to Cortona in the province of Arezzo for info on restaurants, accommodations, things to do and see, etc. — KAREN CURITORE www.wanderlust-travel.com
