I’m flying from London to New York mid-late December and returning early January. I’ve currently got two tickets coach class; what are the chances of getting an upgrade and how would I go about it? (My reason for asking is I’m 6′5" and my travel companion is 6′3" – the last time I travelled coach was a nightmare, but I can’t afford a business/first ticket….)

It’ll be difficult gettin an upgrade without miles in your acct. A more realistic thing to do may be to select the best seat you can find. Get hold of the seating plans for the plane you’ll be flying and then make a request. Bulkhead seats aren’t bad, and sometimes you’ll find seats near exits where there’s no seat directly in front of you. Some people actually pick their flights depending on which planes are flying because all planes are not created equal when it comes to seat spacing.
