Hand checking all Carryon Bags

Question:

I just heard about the new rules on checking all carryon bags by hand! Denver had lines around 3 hours at the security checkpoint on Thursday and this Friday morning when they should of had time for more help lines are still long! I have a 6:30 AM flight on Saturday morning, with the time to allow for checking plus  the security time I need to leave for the airport at 2:AM! I am not afraid of flying at all, but I will not be that inconvenienced, this flight will be my last until they improve the flow at the airport! Wayne

Response:

>I am not afraid of flying at all, but I will not be that inconvenienced, >this flight will be my last until they improve the flow at the airport!

I am so sick and tired of hearing all of you complain about being incovenienced.  What about the families of all those people who were killed? Do you think they feel incovenienced by this?  What about the people who were flying to California the day of this disaster, who never made it to their destinations?  Do you think they feel inconvenienced by this?  What about the volunteers and workers (thank you, thank you) who are giving of their time so generously?  Do you think they feel inconvenienced by this?  There are close to 6,000 people who would love to be incovenienced the way you are.  Get off your damn high horse and be glad that you are here today and are able to enjoy such inconveniences.

Response:

I don’t mind any rule as long as it makes sense having to wait in line because they are unprepapared is as bad as having bags X-rayed by someone who has no idea how to do their job. in Denver turnover rate for screeners was over 200%/year! I work on an Air Force base, Have to show 2 ID’s to get on base walk a mile to gate show 2 ID’s again have all bags searched.  I have to report all my travel a Polygraph etc… I don’t consider those and inconvenience because there is a reason for it. To decide to check each carryon bag and not have the resources to do it in a timely fashion is my complaint! Wayne

My MIL returned from Amsterdam to Toronto last night and she had her hand luggage checked three times before she boarded the plane.  Even with the tightened security, she arrived about 1 hour late from overseas.  I, for one, would be thankful for the extra precaution. Lola in Hamilton

I don’t mind the extra security but to have to arrive 4 hours early so you can stand in line for a couple of hours to check in the  another  couple of hours to go thru screening is not practical they should have enough people checking so that people can flow! I think one of the recent lessons we have learned is that a terrorist attack can come at any time in any form.  If there IS a next time, it could very well be a hi-tech device in an innocent looking carry-on bag.  I don’t care to take a chance. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > …snip…Get off your damn high horse and be glad that you are here today and are > able to enjoy such inconveniences. > It appears that you’re the winner in the high horse contest. > Do you really think that hand searching luggage would have stopped the terrorist > attacks?

Response:

Sadly I must tell you that in my opinion you are totally correct Candy. A terrorist attack can come in any form, anyplace, and at anytime. I have 20 plus years as a maximum security professional and I no that there is no way to make anyplace secure. Confiscating nail clippers at airports isn’t going to do it for sure. The only added security obtained from all the searches is primarily additional time to study the passengers or to have a terrorist screw up and get nervous. Physically the actual security is almost useless. A weapon can be made out of almost anything. A very small example. If you have a pair of shoes you are finished with rip open the sole. There you will find in most shoes a verg nice metal bar, in my business we would call that a shank. Take that, make it razor sharp, replace it and reglue. Use both shoes and you now have easily accessable, will pass any detector, matching knives. A nice Bic Pen is about the most lethal stabbing device you will ever find cheap. ( ps also makes a good hypo needle ). So when I hear they are taking nail clippers I’m sorry but I laugh. So how do you secure us. You make it too costly to the regimes, states, countries that promote terrorism. The belief was that if you hint the US mainland direct that the consequences would be so severe that it just wouldn’t pay. Disprove that but limiting our response and you open the entire country to continual and devastating terrorism. These people are not stupid, they blanded in, lived among us, had instructions on how to behave, carry on checks just isn’t going to deter that kind of operation. They knew that airline security would be tightened so they also apparently have plans to use tanker trucks. Even f-16’s won’t deter, only limit collateral damage. Remember, the friendly f-16 on your port side is not there to capture the terrorist. It is there to shoot you down. That they would hope might deter the use of aircraft but I don’t think so, just means you only killed a few hundred Americans and destroyed one plane, still a strike for the terrorist. It will hopefully eliminate other deaths on the ground. The Iranian’s that were taken off the Air Canada plane the other day after making threats to " kill all Americans. " Was this just a stupid person or was it a test of the newer procedures? If you have no concern about your own death it is fairly easy to destroy and kill. This is the terrorists primary weapon, people that are not looking to get out of the situation they create alive. I’m not looking to make everyone feel bad but unless we get out there and kick some real butt, our country has changed forever and ever. Yet already we have political correctness concerns. Changing the name of the operation because it offends a particular segment? Give me a break! Play those games and we will all be running to the supermarket and praying that we get there and back like they do in so many countrys already. Many lived in fantasy land before the world trade center attack. If you believe any of these precautions will work then you still live there. Next the terrorists family’s will be suing us demanding payment because it was our fault they were driven to murder and terrorism and what scares me is that there will be well meaning citizens agreeing with them. Please WAKE AMERICA. George in NY

We really need to give the airports a little slack here. Yes, they need more people but you can’t just open the doors and have new employees available at the snap of a finger.  One of the problems with the system is that the current employees are not screened or trained properly.  Hiring the first bodies that walk through the door will not help anyone. Like all major changes… this is going to take some time and require some patience on the part of the people flying.  Give it some time so the airlines, airports and FAA can sort out their problems and develop a better system. Oh… and get used to waiting in line. No matter what system they come up with, the days of checking your bags at the curb and going straight to the jetway to check-in and board your plane are over. When I returned from Montreal to Miami, the lines were three hours long. No one minded a bit. As far as having extra help to check us in, the airlines have lost a ton of money and can’t afford the extra help. That’s one of the reason Bush has asked the National Guard to aid with security and check in at airports. Just relax. Your convenience MUST take second place to security right now. Carole
