Fascist one-way fares
Question:
>I want to fly SF to NYC one way. Every airline I call tells me I have to >pay *more* than I would if I was flying round-trip. What is this crap? >$400 for one-way? $375 for round-trip? One-way is HALF the jet fuel. >How widespread is this practice? It’s an *administrative* convenience to >make everyone do the same thing: fly round-trip. >Is there ANY airline with reasonable one-way fares?
You pay higher for a one-way because, for the most part, there are no restrictions such as time of purchase, changes, and so on. You can get some really inexpensive one-way fares but they carry restrictions such as time of day, advance purchase, specific flights, and specific airports (such as the case in multi-airport cities). The round-trip fares are aimed toward the pleasure traveller who can make plans in advance while the one way and unrestricted fares are aimed toward the business flyer who need major flexibility. If you do not wish to pay the air fares then you have the option of taking the bus or the train, which for about 1/2 a one way fare will get you there in about 4 days from coast-to-coast.

You might want to look up the meaning of the word "Fascist" in a dictionary. To quote one of my favorite movies: "I do not think that that word means what you think it means." High priced one way tickets are the airlines way to collect money from business travellers that have no choice as to when and where they fly. This allows the casual traveller to get a great deal on an advance purchase ticket. Buy a round trip ticket and throw the unused part away. It’s not a difficult concept… >Is there ANY airline with reasonable one-way fares?
Sure… Fly Southwest. They don’t make a distinction on one-way vs. round trip. Ken …But I’ll be alright As long as there’s light from a neon moon.

What they don’t tell you is that the one-way fare has no restrictions (full refund, change time/date, buy at last minute) whereas the cheaper return fare has tons of restrictions (buy in advance, probably no refund, probably have to stay one saturday, no chance of flight etc). The real complaint is the unavailability of reduced one-way fares. (There are some here and there, but not overwhelmingly present).
