carry-on baggage question

Question:

I am moving to Norway from the US to get married in a few months and want to carry my wedding gown with me as my carry-on baggage.  I will be flying Northwest.  Does anyone know if this will be possible?  I’m not sure if they will say that it’s too big for carry-on requirements or even if there will be a place to hang it on the plane.   I would appreciate any advice anyone can offer.  Please send me an email because I am in the process of moving and am not online much these days.  Thanks a million!! Leeah

The higher the class of service, the more likely you will be able to carry it on. If traveling economy, don’t count on it. This assumes that it actually is too big for carry on. What size box does it fit in? Michael

Response:

Thanks for the information.  I will not have my wedding gown in a box. I will keep it in the garment bag it comes in.  I could always fold it in half and store it in the overhead compartment during my long flight. I just hope they don’t want me to check it in as regular luggage!  If I carry it folded in half, it’s no bigger than a garment bag.  Hopefully it will work! I also just realized that I wrote the wrong email address!  Please respond to the following email address, thanks!

Response:

since I don’t fly them (NW) much I don’t know exactly, but some airliners have a closet that takes long stuff "up" from the cabin floor (a slot IIRC that extracts coats and the like "up" towards the cabin roof)  If you ask and they have this, it’s better than laying it flat.  I don’t remember if it was 1011 or DC-10 that had this feature and NW only has DC-10

Leeah If it is that important to you, re-arrange your travel plans.  On Iberia, in Business Class, they hang up your garments for you so that they complete the journey in pristine condition. I doubt very much whether ANY US-based airline, in any class, is sure to get your wedding gown to its destination un-creased.

What about boxing it up in a stand-up container and sending it as cargo?

And… for extra "attention", be sure to write "this end up" and "fragile" on it. Make sure you waterproof it. Baggage has been known to spend time in the rain.
