No, the LS is basically the same platform as the Jaguar S-Type, and is available with either the Duratec 3-liter 4-valve V6 or a detuned version of the Jaguar V8. It uses a 5-speed automatic that is shared only with the Jag. <snip> Shoot, I fell for the troll… :) — -Stephen H. You are entitled to you opinion but I have owned both.  I owned TWO Lexus V8’s, the second costing a lot more than the first. When I went to buy the third in 1999 the price had gone way up again.  I ended up buying a 2000 Lincoln LS V8 that was every bit as good as my Lexus, and I also bought a 1999 Mustang GT convertible.  Both for the price of another Lexus!!  I now have a 2001 Mustang GT convertible and a 2002 Lincoln LS V8 and I am more than please with the money I saved and I have a sporty car to drive as well.  But hey, its your money spend it were you will, but why run down a vehicle you have never owed based on a perception. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Let me understand this. > Ford = Lexus > NOT > Before you buy a Lexus V6, take a look at the Lincoln LS V8 and save > yourself $10,000. > > Don’t count on having a lot of room to negotiate in the NYC area. You can purchase any domestic vehicle from a dealer anywhere in the country and have it dropped shipped from the factory to another dealer, anywhere. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > I bought my LX470 while in Phoenix from a dealer back home in South > Carolina…..actually I was negotiating w/ a dealer in PHX and got to the > price I wanted to pay over the phone w/ local dealer back home…….went > back to SC and paid for the SUV and drove it home…. Before you buy a Lexus V6, take a look at the Lincoln LS V8 and save yourself $10,000. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Don’t count on having a lot of room to negotiate in the NYC area. Don’t count on having a lot of room to negotiate in the NYC area. I’ve heard that many of the Lexus dealers around here know the car’s in demand and won’t budge from List. I bought my LX470 while in Phoenix from a dealer back home in South Carolina…..actually I was negotiating w/ a dealer in PHX and got to the price I wanted to pay over the phone w/ local dealer back home…….went back to SC and paid for the SUV and drove it home…. I’m a very happy, satisfied Lexus owner.  My local dealer is terrific!! I’m sure glad I didn’t buy the SUV in Phx and drive it home to have to have it serviced in SC. You could also try the Internet to find a dealer in NY, most will call you back within a day……. J. PS. You sure are a nice son, your parents will be surprised and pleased w/ the Lexus, I’m sure of that.

I have plans to purchase a new 2002 ES300 for my parents in the next couple of months (my parents desperately need a new car but would never get one on their own). I live on the west coast, they live on the east coast and I don’t have time in the near future to pay them a visit. Ideally I would like to find a dealer in New York, choose the vehicle with its options, negotiate the price and pay for it, and allow my parents to simply go pick it the car at the dealer and have the dealer familiarize them with the vehicle before they drive it away. The problem with doing this, is that I take the risk of purchasing a vehicle without actually seeing the actual car or taking it for a test drive. I assume that with a new Lexus, this shouldnt be a big concern of mine. I also haven’t yet figured out how to negotiate a decent price on the car, by doing it from 3000 miles away, rather than haggling with the dealer in person (not looking for a steal, just a good price). So to anyone out there who has ever bought a car for someone this way, I would appreciate some advice. Thanks
