Australia/New Zealand

Question:

Booked for Star Princess Jan 04 – looking for advice on "must see". Maybe from someone who has taken this tour ?? Thanks, appreciate any info.

Response:

The overnight excursion to Queenstown and Milford Sound was fantastic. I actually got to go bungy jumping from the suspension bridge (I’m 50….a 70 year old man from the ship did it, and talked me into it).  Unfortunately our ship, The Legend of the Seas, developed engine trouble and had to putt putt over to Australia to get fixed, thus stranding us in….paradise for three extra days.  Australia would not let us fly in to meet the ship until we had our passports…naturally they were all on the ship.  To "make up" for the inconvenience, RCI gave us 50% off future cruise credits.   We also spent some extra time in Auckland.  We booked over the internet the services of a local man as a guide.  His name is Michael Hood, and he was fantastic.  If you are interested, his website is: http://www.nziet.co.nz/index.html  He took us to the glowworm caves one day and up to the Bay of Islands for a nice overnight trip.  You can tour around Auckland on your own.  There is a lot to see and do, depending on your interests.   For most of the stops,  I suggest you buy a good guide book and take a taxi to where you want to go.  The people are very friendly and accomodating. The gardens are fantastic.    Walk across the bridge in Sydney on the pedestrian walkway….or climb it.   The view is great.   You will love your trip, but the air flight over there is a tough 17 hour trip from LA.  I took a sleeping pill on the return trip, and it was worth it to be knocked out for a while.   Have a great trip…..from another Florida girl in Jacksonville.

Hi In regards to air travel, I found that paying a little more for deviation and choosing Quatas Air from LAX to Sydney last March, was well worth the few bucks! Quatas has very comfortable seats, and is only airline in the world that has never lost a passenger. Van in Texas

Hi, I don’t think that statement is correct but I could be mistaken.  Has Southwest or Jet Blue ever had a fatality? Best regards, Ray LIGHTHOUSE TRAVEL 800-719-9917 or 805-566-3905 http://www.lighthousetravel.com

Response:

YES –the flight to Sidney is a killer — even 1st class. WHAT sleep pills are best ?

Response:

We "did" QUATAS – every seat was full -it was terrible

Appreciate all the responses – this ng nevers fails to help. I have gotten the really good promotions from Princess (2 for 1).

Can you give me the name of the TA where you got these 2 for 1 deals? Send it to my email. Thanks. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Appreciate all the responses – this ng nevers fails to help. > I have gotten the really good promotions from Princess (2 for 1).

Princess sends these promotions to Captains Circle members. I get several every month. Any travel agent can handle it, you just give them your Captains Circle numer. — Charles

ABSOLUTELY!!  We spent 3 weeks in Australia and 1 week in New Zealand, touring both countries by land in (their) summer of 1993.  We have often talked about moving there.  I don’t know about NZ but Australia has strict immigration standards. We’re planning a cruise for "down under" for their summer of 2004/2005. But where are you seeing these great deals for this year? We might be tempted to move up our plans if it’s a better deal. We’ve been saving our frequent flyer miles and now have enough for Business Class.  Still striving for First Class. Our first trip was First Class with frequent flyer miles (I did a lot of business traveling back then).  It is a very very long trip.  If you have to pay and go coach, keep the end result in mind.  Both places are wonderful. If you get a chance to spent some time in Sydney (pre or post cruise) try to get out to the Blue Mountains which are a few hours to the West.   There is a lodge called Jemby Rinjah (Blue Parrot) that is the most fantastic place we’ve every stayed. http://www.jembyrinjahlodge.com.au/ — Barbara http://www.bapcentral.com/cruise.html – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Australia and New Zealand are well worth the cost of airfare. Two wonderful countries I have visited many times (although never on a cruise) & well worth the flight.  Check for promotions – sometimes Air NZ does a 2 for 1 Business class fare with American Express, Air Pacific usually has reasonable upgrade fares to Business class – makes a huge difference.  Or, why not stop over in LA, Hawaii or Fiji?  Go – you’ll be glad you did!
