Yes, partner credits get posted at a snail’s pace, so don’t count on that 12/21 rental or hotel stay. > why not rent a cheapo car from alamo for a weekend day now? it’ll only > cost you $25 or so, which is not bad considering you’ll end up with a > free RT ticket out of it.
Or better yet, why don’t you change your long distance carrier? They will usually credit you with the changeover fee (~$5) plus give you miles. MCI is a AA partner. I’d suggest that you call American and check if they sell any quanitity of FF miles to allow you to cash in for a reward before the year-end expiration. I know that some airlines sell 1000 or 2000 miles of FF miles to help us when we’re just short of an award level.

i’d be verrrrry careful about assuming your 12/21 car rental will give you mileage credit before 12/31. car rental miles seem to take forever to show up on my AA FF account, and you may *still* be w/o the necessary mileage when 12/31 rolls around. why not rent a cheapo car from alamo for a weekend day now? it’ll only cost you $25 or so, which is not bad considering you’ll end up with a free RT ticket out of it. chris –

However, am flying to Phoenix (NOT on AA) on Dec. 21 – and renting a car. What’s my best chance for getting at least 500 more miles in that regard? Also, if I get them – then what? No travel plans early in the new year. If I get 500 more miles, can I just request a certificate without any travel plans — or what. Need help on this – I don’t wanta lose these miles when I’m so close to 25,000 (which I would probably use to go somewhere later in 1997.) Thanks….

Get the miles, then request a certificate — usually good for a year from date of issue. In that respect, you have two years to use the miles because you can always book a flight a year from the date the certificate expires. To make matters easier, you can always re-instate an expired certificate. Last time I did that was two years ago. Then it cost $40. If the price doubled, it is still a bargain. Good luck. Some of the tricks that I use to quickly build up miles are as follows Stay at hotels that offer bonus miles for checking in. Usually 500 miles at a clip. Your saying to yourself "Hey I knew that" well check in and out every day! (You’ll need a desk clerk who’ll agree to do it) But it works, and best of all AAs policy is if you can get away with it and youre not breaking the law they Hey, why not. This technique works for car rentals as well. On a five night stay with a car rental you can rack up 5000 miles. Make sure you charge it on your AAdvantage credit card. Do you know someone who is going somewhere? buy the ticket for them under your name (Domestic Only) on your AA credit card. Find a route that has a DEEP discount and fly that route back and forth for the weekend. Several Times! Now some people might think this a bit crazy but On some of the flights to out of the way destinations round trip airfare can be $3-4000. While the cost of accumulating enough points using the deep discount method for a "free" RT ticket will run about $2000 Now you have what is essentially a %50 discount. I know these methods seem to take a bit of work but its a way to beat the system. The car/Hotel methods are best suited to business travelers. While the deepdiscount method is great for college students with time to kill. You can take really interesting vacations for relatively little money. Well you asked for it folks. Need other methods just email me. I got a million of them. ( theres also the hidden city tricks but my fingers are tired.
