My prime focus was on the fact that when booked in advanced, it makes no different what elite level you have. If you have elite status at time of booking, then you get the BC seats. Michael

It isn’t standby upgrading; it’s simply a matter of getting a coach seat reassigned from something like 24A to 8A. Perhaps you never change your plans after you depart and therefore you never have to contend with seat assignments that aren’t what you would have liked. I do. And the fact is that I have seen gate agents keep their own lists of who wants to move around as a way of allocating what’s left in 7A-12J. One situation where this arises is where 7A-12J are fully booked but a passenger in those seats is a no-show. Gate agents will give that seat away, and who they give it to when more than one EP/P/G member wants it is up to the agent who uses his/her own initiative.

I didn’t miss the point. You mentioned getting the Business Class seat on a non BC fare flight. I don’t recall you talking about standby upgrading. In my experience, I always get the BC seat when I make the reservation, without asking for it and traveling on any fare. As far as getting them at the gate goes. If there seats have not been sold or previously assigned, there is no standby. If there is no standby list, then you get the seat when you check in with no priority of EP, P, or Gold. Michael

You miss the point. Somebody books a seat (or is rebooked) without knowing that the new flight is a 767. He gets to the gate and realizes that if he acts fast, he might be able to get his coach seat reassigned into the business class section. All his fellow frequent flyers are seeking exactly the same thing. The question is, who gets the cushy seats and who doesn’t? The first sort is based on who’s Exec Platinum, plain Platinum, and Gold. The next sort — which is where it gets interesting — is based on other factors.

This was done at time of booking the cheap fare, had nothing to do with fare class. Michael

Not totally accurate. I am Platinum and always get the BC seats, even when I fly at the cheapest fare. Of course, then most of the time I upgrade to the first class cabin. Michael Michael Capitola, CA USA

I am Platinum too. If there are more Platinum members asking for seats in BC than there are unassigned seats, a gate agent is free to assign them based on fares (Y, H, etc). I’ve seen it happen. Whether AA’s seat assignment system is programmed like this, I can’t say.

Response:

AA First class domestic on a 763 depends on what class of service you take.  I have taken all three classes.  And YES.  On this particular plane there are three classes of service.  Business class is really like first class on a two compartment plane.  First class gives you individual video monitors with a choice of 40 movies.  Meal service is great at dinner time when excellent caviar is served with blinis and champagne.  HAVE A GOOD FLIGHT!! Sam

Response:

I believe that all AA 767s are configured for 3 classes. However, on some domestic flights, business class is not offered — AA usually puts gold and platinum members who bought nondiscounted Y fares into those seats.
