SFO rental cars
Question:
: car rental at SFO (San Francisco) much different than before… I remember : when each agency had their own lots.. now they are each in one tower or : garage… the SFO rental car center it’s called….. it’s a few miles from : the main terminal complex…… need a little time to return car and get to : plane…. And they charge you $6 to take the shuttle from the terminal to the car rental building. What a rip-off! One other problem I had, I mistakenly entered the wrong company lot, and was never able to back out. Lucky I was early otherwise I would have missed my flight while waiting for my car to "flush" out the other side of the queue. What a pain. – Manny.

Isn’t it $5 for each car rental plus another $2 for something else plus taxes? It is a ripoff. Ira Zimmerman

Is there any advantage NOT renting at SFO, and getting the car at one of the big downtown SF hotels, or, at a downtown SF location? – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->And they charge you $6 to take the shuttle from the terminal to the car >rental building. ??? I’ve ridden the "Rental car shuttle" more times than I care to think*, and I’ve never been charged a cent, let alone $6. Ever. Geoff * Think "dozens"….

I didn’t say it was, but actually it is. I just think they should have a system where someone who makes an honest mistake doesn’t take the risk of missing a flight. I was lucky that was early and only had to wait 45 minutes. – Manny.

To me "charge you $6 to take the shuttle" sounds like a fare for riding the bus, which it isn’t. I’ve ridden the shuttle to meet someone at the rental terminal, for which I’ve not been charged. Also, the charge is the same for one person or four in a single car. And finally, if by some means you got to the rental terminal without taking the shuttle bus, you’d still be stuck with the item on your rental agreement. Words, words, words. I’m just looking forward to the elevated rail system.

Not really. When I rent cars at SFO, I am usually dropped off by a friend at the car rental center. In these cases, I always ask for the shuttle charge to be removed, and they always remove it.
Response:
it’s a buried charge. Look for it on you return slip. I’m not sure about the $6 but there is a charge buried there. ;-)

Response:
There was an extra $6 on our car rental at San Fran earlier this month. It wasn’t buried but quite openly stated there was a charge for the airport shuttle. It is a very efficient operation and I don’t mind paying for the service. We used Dollar rentals, booked on their internet site and found them substantially cheaper than anyone else. Sue

Response:
By "buried" I meant that it’s a "line item" on the bill, not "hidden". I didn’t say that I minded it (well, only a "little"), just that it’s there. It’s listed as "SFO rental car access fee" or something like that. The alternative is to take the bus and that may be better assuming that you have to DRIVE in SFO (which I ABSOLUTELY HATE!!) and then take public trans once there.

You fly into LAX all the time. The lots for SFO are only at the parking garage at the edge of the airport, not all that far away, and much closer than the rental lots at LAX. In fact the rental center is on airport property, on the north side of the airport. Really more convenient than when they were in the temporary lots on the south side of the airport. Aren’t you the guy who’s always running for your flights, and angry because you have to go through security? Same whine, different airport. Funny thing. Netscape always runs spell checker before a message gets sent. In every instance it wants to change your name to from Moran to Moron. Hmmm, maybe Robert Johnson
Response:
I am not one who likes to spend much "dead" time either waiting or returning cars. On my last trip, I would have had enough time to make the flight except that the car rental people ahd computer problems… I made it to the terminal……had to get on a community bus to get there….. then it was waiting in line….. flight was close to leaving as I reached the counter to check my bags……. The rental car facilities in Phoenix are not that bad.. most are right in the terminals. >Cleveland has also adopted this >idea. The rental counters at DTW were also moved out of the terminal too—now there are courtesy phones to the majors. At least ATL does it right, once you get off the escalator from the train, right in front of you are Budget, Dollar, Avis, Hertz, etc….. Maryanne

It’s true, it takes considerably longer to pick up and drop off a rental car at the new combined rental garage than it did when each company had its own lot, at least if you’re renting from one of the big companies that was right on the airport already. They’re building a little train that will go from the terminals to the rental garage. When it’s done, pickups and dropoffs should be quick again, but it’ll be a couple of years until it’s done, and it does seem kind of dim to build the new garage three years before the train that takes you to it. Unfortunately for those of us who travel frequently on business and rent cars on most of our trips, there seems to be a trend to build new rental car facilities farther and farther away from the terminals, then to build new terminal parking where the rental cars had been.

I am not sure what your question is, but when I rented a car from an off airport company near SFO recently, it really was no big deal to return the car to the company, I think it was called Fox, get the rental shuttle to the main rental facility on the airport grounds, and than an airport shuttle to the terminal. It took a little longer than what I am used to, but since I knew about the procedure beforehand, I simply got to the rental agency a little earlier just to be safe.

I had no problems at the new SFO facility, took about 20 minutes from return to being dropped at the terminal. Only objection is the boarding procedure (or lack thereof) for the shuttles. Resembled the Tokyo subway. Cleveland has also adopted this idea. Facility is on the North side. B.
