need some advice.
Question:
Terry, I have not done an MBA but I know many who have. An MBA is best done relatively late with as much experience already behind you as possible – that is the true value of the MBA. I don’t like MIS being treated as a special area. Technology is an enabler which should make possible and support good business processes. MIS is an everyday part of all business activity and definitely not a function in itself (not that I’m saying focusing on MIS in an MBA is wrong). Business is still about making widgets or having ideas or buying and selling – what goes on behind this MUST support that at all times. I was wondering if some of you MBA graduates with work experience in the IT industry can give me some advice. I am facing two choices right now in terms of my education. 1. I can go and take an MBA – with a focus on: Management Information Systems or, 2. I can go to college for a Networking Diploma program, get relevant work experience and then attend a business school (at age 29) part-time for my MBA. At present, my work experience is only in customer service. What should I do? What kind of jobs are out there for someone who graduates with an MBA in the MIS area? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks, Terry

I’ll start by saying I believe that an MBA and MIS background will be a great combination. Having said that I found it extremely valuable to have experience BEFORE going back for my MBA. The most valuable part of the MBA program for me and others I have spoken with is not the text book material. We all have had access to that information. What was truly valuable was the interaction and knowledge sharing between the students and instructors. Classes were less lecture and more here is the problem how can we solve. Everyone in the classes drew on their experience and background to offer ideas and insights. It is this interaction that you learn the most from. In addition taking part time MBA classes while working full time you are able to apply the knowledge learn and integrate your schooling and experience. For example many of the research papers and group projects could be conducted on topics you are dealing with at work. I had a group project were we went to local companies, (usually a group members employer), and conduct our research and made recommendation. This provided us with a great real world learning experience and the business with free MBA consultants. You can expect in an MBA program lots of case studies and group projects. I hope this helps Don I was wondering if some of you MBA graduates with work experience in the IT industry can give me some advice. I am facing two choices right now in terms of my education. 1.
