Small business Advertising Stats

Question:

I’m trying to locate a source for advertising spending in various media for small businesses.  Specifically, I’m looking for information for businesses with annual revenue of less than $1 million. Any thoughts? David Harkins Versant Consulting Group, LLC

Response:

Hello David, First you might want to specify for what countries. The U.S. has a number of industry groups and publications (I guess advertising agency associations would be a good place to start). There are also a few mainstream trade publication who have already published this kind of information. A web search on back issues might be very fruitful. You may have to develop a composite picture by searching for total spending and may looking for top % spending  of top advertising buyers… what’s left over may give you a rough estimate. There are a number of other more complicated indirect ways of estimating the spending. You could compile a list of advertising agencies and estimate earnings… Another more practical approach is to build a working relationship with people working in companies such as Merril Lynch who regularly publish industry forecasts and performance reports. Just a few suggestions for finding the information. J.P. Solyom KS Business Development

Please tell me the industry you are in and I can provide you with that information.  It is from a masters course I took in retail marketing. I have seen more than one reference to a basic 10% rule….If you plan to gross 500,000.00 then you should expect to spend about 50,000 on advertising and marketing. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Please tell me the industry you are in and I can provide > you with that > information.  It is from a masters course I took in retail > marketing. > (assuming you are in retail of course) >I’m trying to locate a source for advertising spending in > various media for >small businesses.  Specifically, I’m looking for > information for businesses >with annual revenue of less than $1 million. >Any thoughts? >David Harkins >Versant Consulting Group, LLC
