Need advice about UC And Pred.

Question:

Greg-         Whatever you do, don’t quit the Prednisone cold turkey- it can be VERY dangerous (life-threatening) to do so… you must be weaned off Prednisone if your doctor wants you to do this. (He’ll tell you to do this anyway- but I just didn’t want you to just up and stop taking the medicine.)         My advice for you is to get your doctor to switch you from azulfidine to asacol.  Asacol doesn’t have the side effects (light sensitivity, headaches, stomach upset) that azulfidine has- in fact- I’ve had NO SIDE EFFECTS from asacol.  (Others have reported them though- but they seem minor to the hell I went thru on azulfidine)         Last spring I had a major flare up and my doctor had me on high doses of azulfidine, tapered prednisone and daily rowesa enemas.  He decided to take me off all of the meds and switched me to asacol- and within two weeks, the flare up subsided.  Asacol is much more heavily coated then azulfidine tabs, and I think this makes for a stronger delivery of mesalamine to the lower bowel where it’s needed.  I feel GREAT since I’ve started asacol- I’m now even working out (!) to lose some of the weight.  (Doing AB crunches was OUT of the question last spring) Cheers, Paul – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Hello, > I’m new to this group, but have had UC for ten years.  My UC is only > caused by stress and nothing else.  About a month ago or so, my wife and > I had a blowout and like clockwork, my colitis kicked in with a > vengeance, one week later.  For about three weeks now its been going > strong and continuing to get a little worse each day. > My question is, in the past I have always tackled the problem with 40 > mg. of Prednisone every morning with a light breakfast or milk, but the > last few years this has gradually become less effective and now about > all it does is lessen the severe urgency to go.  I would like to take > 50, 60 or even 70 mg. per day but i’m afraid of the side effects.  I > have noticed that some of the people in this group take large doses of > Prednisone. Greg, If I were you I would listen to your dr.  High doses of pred can make you very sick.  It can cause many different side effects which I’m sure you’re aware of.  The largest amount of steroids normally prescribed is 60 mg per day.  That is a high dose.  You shouldn’t raise your dosage without your dr’s consent.  If you want some advice on looking into the surgery you can e-mail me.  I had the surgery 8 years ago.  There are other alternatives to feeling better.  Good luck and remember don’t risk your own life it’s too dangerous!!!! I’d advise against large pred doses. Like you, I get irritable, short tempered and other side effects. I don’t take pred at all anymore. If you haven’t yet tried it, ask your doctor about 5-ASA (Asacol, Pentasa, other brands, formulations and delivery methods) It works for a great number of folks and with litle or ussually no side effects. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Hello, > I’m new to this group, but have had UC for ten years. Hello, I’m new to this group, but have had UC for ten years.  My UC is only caused by stress and nothing else.  About a month ago or so, my wife and I had a blowout and like clockwork, my colitis kicked in with a vengeance, one week later.  For about three weeks now its been going strong and continuing to get a little worse each day. My question is, in the past I have always tackled the problem with 40 mg. of Prednisone every morning with a light breakfast or milk, but the last few years this has gradually become less effective and now about all it does is lessen the severe urgency to go.  I would like to take 50, 60 or even 70 mg. per day but i’m afraid of the side effects.  I have noticed that some of the people in this group take large doses of Prednisone. It causes me to be moody, short tempered, and impairs my concentration, not to mention all the physical problems.  My doctor doesn’t want to prescribe more than 50 mg per day.  I’d like to take more but I’m afraid it will make all the side effect proportionally worse. any suggestions would be great.  I run my own computer consulting business from home and it is starting to suffer because some days I just cant leave the house. Age  33 weight 260 lb height 6′ 2′,  large build. I’m also taking Azulfidine 2 mg. twice daily  ( it doesn’t seem to help much ) thanks, Greg
