How to kill your competitors stone dead??
Question:
I would be interested in people’s comments on what for me was an innovative use of the Internet as a means of rubbishing someone. Has anyone experienced anything similar? The background is as follows. I replied to an item in a newsgroup requesting information on the customer base of a software vendor – say Company X. Two days later a new posting arrived in the newsgroup – with my name attached to it, and under my email address which went as follows…. ""You Americans are a stupid people to say the least. With That being said…the least you bloody idiots can do to increase your lot is to purchase the "Company X DOSSIER" from Rubic Consulting. Contact me for Purchase Info you bumbling Yankees."" As you can imagine there was uproar on the Newsgroup about racist comments etc etc… and my mailbox was full of hate mail for weeks. I did reply obviously pointing out that clearly this was a set-up and is clearly not the way one would go about promoting a book or report. It surprised me how apparently easy it was to use someone else’s email address without being traced – at least the people who run this newsgroup couldn’t. It also struck me that this was another sinister way in which the anonimity of the Internet could be exploited by devious individuals to do a lot of damage. I would also be very interested to know if there is some way of protecting against this happening to me again.
