Uh…why is Vegas a tourist attraction? Lotsa folks like to gamble. I don’t, but I’ve tagged along a few times with high – roller pals to take advantage of the fabulous free buffets (seafood, sushi, prime rib, etc.) and free drinks that these guys have access to at the Chicago – area boats/casinos. I’ve seen some of these folks win many thousands at a time. And if the casino is Amerindian – owned, you can buy cigs *really* cheap…. Best Greg

>(Miss Crack Whore USA?) All of us pageant folks are wondering "what the h***"" when the USA people said the 2001 Pageant would be in Gary. Could someone in r.t.a. tell me what redeeming tourist factors there are in Gary for me to make the trip the first week of March, 2001 to watch the Pageant? A friend of mine runs a local franchise to the Miss Texas USA/Miss Texas Teen USA pageant and her Teen USA winner won the state Texas title and is going to the national Miss Teen USA pageant in August—we just hope that it isn’t in Gary! One of the other girls from MAA is also the Teen Alaska winner—so I will be really stuck as to who to root for in case I do decide to make the trip in August (provided the Pageant is still in Shreveport).

There’s a big casino boat there, and you could always hop on the Skyway or I – 94 and go over to SW Michigan (Harbor Country). Lotsa rural charm. If the weather is nice, you could always visit Indiana Dunes State Park. And, of course, if you dig 20th century industrial archeology, Gary is a dream…. Conversely, you could come over to Chicago, and I’d be glad to show some of the girls some leather bars. Or we could go to the Baton Show Lounge, where the "girls" are more "girlier" than your girls…. I’m a big believer in "cross – cultural education", ya see…. > A friend of mine runs a local franchise to the Miss Texas USA/Miss Texas > Teen USA pageant and her Teen USA winner won the state Texas title and > is going to the national Miss Teen >USA pageant in August—we just >hope > that it isn’t in Gary!
Why — aren’t all you Southron belles chaperoned, Maryanne???? > One of the other girls from MAA is also the Teen Alaska winner—so I > will be really stuck as to who to root for in case I do decide to make > the trip in August (provided the Pageant is still in Shreveport).
Shreveport’s WAY too muggy in August, hon — wreaks havoc with all that Spray Net and pan – cake foundation…and some alligators might even come out of the swamps and bite some of the contestant’s new nylons! Best Greg

Anybody living on the South Shore line (and in the south suburbs). That’s a fair amount of customers looking to avoid O’Hare. Midway is a solution for some of them, but plenty of them would rather fly without going across Chicago first, and 55th Street isn’t always so scenic either. If people really are going to go considerably out of their way because the shorter drive is unattractive, however, I’m inclined to support Erik’s view. OTOH, I take Kenny’s point as well–I didn’t know anybody was actually flying out of there until somebody mentioned the flight to MKE, where I didn’t know anybody was actually flying into. So far it’s not impressing me as a well-served alternative

Gary, Indiana airport sets sights on expansion CHICAGO (Reuters) – The airport in Gary, Indiana, would see a new terminal and other improvements under a 20-year, $300 million to $700 million plan that will be submitted for federal approval in February, an airport official said Thursday. Paul Karas, director of the Gary-Chicago Airport, said the plan, which was unveiled this week in draft form at a public meeting, was in the process of being finalized before it is sent to the Federal Aviation Administration. The airport, which currently serves one passenger carrier with four flights a day, as well as charter and cargo operators, would have its current runways lengthened, as well as see a new third runway and terminal built under the plan, according to Karas. Much of the financing would come from the sale of general airport revenue bonds that would be paid off with revenues generated by the airport, he said, adding the airport has no debt outstanding. Other sources of funding would include the state of Indiana and federal aviation dollars. Karas said the airport expects no significant funding to come from Chicago, which joined Gary in creating a Chicago-Gary Airport Authority in 1995. The airport currently receives $1.5 million a year from passenger facility charges Chicago collects at its two airports, he added. Chicago Mayor Richard Daley pursued the idea of a bi-state airport authority to circumvent a bill introduced in the Illinois General Assembly that would have created a state-dominated regional airport authority that would own and control Chicago’s O’Hare International and Midway airports and build a third area airport in Peotone, Ill. An airport in Peotone is still on the drawing board of Illinois officials who want to see it built to ease congestion at Chicago’s airports. Karas said the Gary airport, located near the border between Chicago’s southeast side and the northwest corner of Indiana, already serves that function, pointing out that recent severe winter weather detoured some cargo operations to Gary. "We are a true reliever airport," he said. "The highways and expressways are here and commuter rail is on our border." Gary’s expansion plan will depend on increased traffic that would result from attracting more carriers and the condition of the economy, according to Karas. He said the airport may collect its own PFCs sometime over the next five years.
