cheap gas for BMW 740 ?

Question:

Dear friends, I am driving a 1998 BMW 740. It uses gas quite fast. I am using no-lead 89 Octane gas (middle grade). Do you recommend using 87 octal no-lead regular? Performance is no much of my concern. I do not go fast or jack rabbit start or speeding or such. My only concern is any bad result or damage to the engine. Any commends? Thanks, Jill

Response:

2001jgy: It is important to use the octane rating that BMW recommends for your automobile, or that any company recommends for their car.  I have read countless times that improper octance can actually cause damage to the engine.  The reason being is that the car is programmed to use a specific octane, and not using it will result in unburned fuel, and carbon build up in the engine.  These will obviously shorten the life of your engine, as well as cause it to perform sub-par (though performance loss is not the real problem!). You mentioned you are currently using 89 octane…I am not sure of what the specs were for your car, but I know that most BMW’s today require no less than 92.  You should consult your owner’s manual and seriously consider changing the grade of gas you are putting into your car. Hope this helps! BMWLife http://www.bmwlife.com When you prefer a six-speed to coffee…

Thank you, rj. Similar questions. For the same 89 octane gas here in California, I find Costco much cheaper than Exxon or Chevron. Do you find different and higher price brand much difference in affecting your BMW 740? I really do not get used to this 8 cylinder high gas usage car. I kept my eye on the mpg gage quite a bit. I can tell this stop and go traffic really hurt my gas mileage more than anything else. Thanks.

Don’t let the poor mileage get you down.  It’s well worth it for the enjoyment of driving a 7!  And as for using premium vs. regular unleaded gasoline, the cost difference probably isn’t really as bad as you might think.  Even if you drive 500 miles a week, get only 15mpg, and the cost difference between regular and premium gas is 50 cents a gallon (a very high estimate, the difference is probably smaller), you would only save about $17 per week by using the lower octane.  Compared to what you’re probably paying for the car, not to mention the cost of repairs should something bad happen due to using a lower octane, $17 a week really isn’t very much money.

If you can afford a 98 740 you can afford the good gas… Derek

Certain expenses are given for this car I use only name brand "quality" gas I drive out to Long Island, once a week for business the gas there is about 10 cents cheaper than where I live so I fill it up I’ve been getting about 18/19 mpg I don’t use the card much during the week, so most of my driving is highway I feel that the gas as well as the oil are too important to get "cheap" They are, I feel the most important, and cheapest expense Find a good,  busy gas station 8 cycliner’s need lots of fuel… keep them content, and clean a few pennises up front will save you alot more in the end. rj – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Thank you, rj. Amen! 2001jgy, do you put Uniroyal Tiger Paw tires on your car? Don’t mean to bust on you, but buying a different car will save you SO much more money than just switching to cheap gas.
