Thanks for posting, Lawrence, but Terri doesn’t know me, and I certainly don’t know her. Please don’t lump us together. Thanks again, Larry! For the record for the third time now: Chip Douglas is *not* in my killfile. He loves dogs (as I do) and he’s entitled to his opinion (as I am). I don’t agree with with a lot of the nonsense he posts, but when he gets loud, he gets loud at individuals, and he’s been fairly polite *to me*. I certainly don’t think running a person off a newsgroup is any way to be open-minded, and I’ve posted at length on this topic. – Michelle

Response:

Seeing this is cross-posted to soc.culture.french, surely someone must have mentioned that the French (and the Swiss for that matter) eat horses ? Personnally, I find that beef tastes better ;-) To give this post some minor relevance to the subject line, I hear that a few years ago there were some ads along the lines of   "Lost at the races last weekend ? Get your revenge, eat a horse!" I’d crosspost this to rec.pets.horses, but it doesn’t seem to exist. — David Gay – Yet Another Starving Grad Student

Response:

When you make "racist" jokes and classify it as "satire" some people are bound to get offended. I am Chinese, and I don’t eat dogs, but I do know Chinese that eat dogs. What is the big deal? In India you will probably be shot if you tell everyone you see that you eat beef, and Muslism don’t eat pigs. So? These are all individual preferences. If you made the joke, some people might think it’s funny, some people might be offended. That is that. If you can’t stand being flamed, don’t make those jokes then. It does not matter what your intention was, what matters is how the reader understands your joke. As I said before, each person has individual preferences, no one can force their believes on to others. I can’t believe this discussion is still going on. And I can’t believe I just contributed to it by replying. :) – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->Let me guess: You think just because I am telling you such jokes are > offensive, >that I’m not "Asian enough," > No, the fact that you find these jokes offensive, again displays your > "thin-skinnedness" and perhaps your desire to remain "politically correct" > at all times.  Any joke about a ‘race’, religion, etc. is meant as satire > and reasonable people understand this.  You, apparently, are not a > reasonable person.  That, or you’re so insecure in your own heritage that > the old Andrew Dice Clay joke about dental floss gives you apoplectic > seizures. >and so I can’t be proud to be an Asian, > There’s a difference between pride and reality.  The reality is that dog is > an acceptable form of sustenance in some Asian countries.  You find that > deplorable and denounce and deny it on behalf of all humanity, never mind > just Asians.  You can’t take ‘pride’ in your heritage by denying the things > you don’t like about it. >  >and yet, >I’m "superior." > You continually flaunt an air of superiority over all others, yes. No, she doesn’t use fake names to slip around and confuse new people. She at least, has the courage to use the same name and not hide behind a plethara of alias’s, like you do. Nope, it’s called *truth.* And again, you show the same ignorance of the laws that you do of dogs . > And now you are back up to your old trick again with racist > remarks and backstabbing tactics:

Unlike you, I am not a racist nor have I ever made racist remarks, It’s called being a human. You wouldnt know much about that. Once again, your’e full of it John. > >Making a comment that soem Asians eat dogs *is* racist when an Asian tells > you >it’s not true and you continue to do it.

snip Ok, you heard it here first, folks. Mishelle_Lee has been appointed spokesperson for ALL Asian’s. Id like to know who, on scaa voted her in? I have a bone to pick with you. Can’t you folks please take her in or revoke the vote?? PLEASE??? She blew into rpd a couple of months ago, and we can’t stand her!! She’s the most arrogant , nasty piece of work Ive seen in a long, long time! She’s full of lies, herself, and basic bullCACA! Now listen up Kieron and Anthony, the spokeswoman for ALL Asians TOLD you; that because SHE told you NO Asian’s eat dog, it isnt true! (Never mind the Germans who still insist that the concentration camps of WW2 don’t exist, it’s all a media propaganda! These Germans told me so, so that must make it true!) Geez.. Now, my husband was in Vietnam. He SAW dogs being eaten. Sometimes that’s all the poor folks HAD to eat. Never mind that China, an Asian nation, recently decided that eating dogs is acceptable. It doesn’t happen! Meshell-Lee said so!!! I guess National Geographic doctored up those photos dogs for sale for food in wire crates ! Cant trust those NG folks! They should have consulted with Meshellle-Lee first to find out the truth! (What an unbelievable ostrich!) Personally, I DONT find eating dog offensive. Different cultures find different things acceptable, who am I to decide if their cultural beliefs are acceptable or not? Some religious sects in India find Americans offensive because our nation eats beef. Personally, I find the Japanese practice of eating Sea Urchin offensive, it’s the worst tasting thing on the face of the earth Ive ever eaten! But hey, that’s THEIR thing. Whatever!!! >People in this groups also do DejaNews lookups.

And despite Meeshelle Lee’s claims, so does she. She pulled up a really slimy nasty stunt on Anthony by consulting Deja News. Ive seen some slimy *humans* in my day, but she’s the Queen of Slime in this one. To make fun of a man’s infertility when he’s suffering is the lowest Ive EVER seen. Make no mistakes, this pit-viper is lower than the people she accuses of being low. >Oh, please, I defend myself just fine. And I don’t even need to resort to >profanity.

No, you just resort to underhanded slimy, sickening tactics. I guess THAT makes you better than those who swear. THAT little stunt, Mishellll-Lee makes you the biggest loser that ever walked the earth. Your’e actually worst than the Sybill list on Dogman’s site! You are truly a slime-ball. AND a disgrace to every single Asian Ive ever met! >>>Get a life. Maybe your sperm count will improve if you stayed away from >>>the radiation your computer emits. – Michelle

THIS proves my case. Scum! The BEST part is that she killfiles everyone, except the troll in rpd that post’s filfthy bestiality binaries, racist scum filfth, and threaten’s people’s job’s and actually calls people at work if he doesn’t like what they say! This can’t be too good for a person whose husband’s livlihood depends upon public support. If she EVER says anything this troll he doesn’t like, her husband’s company could be out of business in a heartbeat, but then, she just hears what she wants to and killfiles the world. I feel sorry for her husband if this happens, but Meshelle-Lee has NO sympathy from me. Disgusted beyond belief, Terri

Response:

>Let me guess: You think just because I am telling you such jokes are offensive, >that I’m not "Asian enough,"

No, the fact that you find these jokes offensive, again displays your "thin-skinnedness" and perhaps your desire to remain "politically correct" at all times.  Any joke about a ‘race’, religion, etc. is meant as satire and reasonable people understand this.  You, apparently, are not a reasonable person.  That, or you’re so insecure in your own heritage that the old Andrew Dice Clay joke about dental floss gives you apoplectic seizures. >and so I can’t be proud to be an Asian,

There’s a difference between pride and reality.  The reality is that dog is an acceptable form of sustenance in some Asian countries.  You find that deplorable and denounce and deny it on behalf of all humanity, never mind just Asians.  You can’t take ‘pride’ in your heritage by denying the things you don’t like about it.  >and yet, >I’m "superior."

You continually flaunt an air of superiority over all others, yes.  Whether this is due to your ‘Asian pride’ or not, I have no idea. > No, Mr. Russo: I am superior because I *do not* make racist >jokes on Usenet.

RacIAL jokes can be funny, no matter who they’re pointed at and do not a racist make.  Apparently, you don’t know the difference, like so many ‘politically correct’ weenies. > I *do not* stomp around with pride and continued ignorance when >someone from an ethnic group other than my own tells me what I assumed of them >was erroneous.

The point here is that it was NOT erroneous.  In some Asian cultures, dog IS an acceptable food source.  You *lied* before, and here again, stating that it, in effect, is not.  You corrected no assumptions, only spouted fallacies to cover *reality*. > I *do not* get sensitive and belligerent and tell a person he’s >being ‘too sensitive’ when he tells me I’m not funny.

Perhaps, Michelle, that’s because you have NO sense of humor whatsoever? >Mind, this was the person who claimed he was "sorry" for posting the original >"joke."

Because it was posted as a direct statement in a NG where it could be viewed as inflammatory.  THAT is what he apologized for, and not the joke itself.  I happen to agree with him, and have accepted his apology at face value.  AND, I was one who objected to his post a great deal. > I suppose he thinks just because he knows one or two Asian people, that >he has ‘many’ Asian friends,

Michelle, compared to what is likely your lack of friends in real life, two people, no matter what race they are, IS many.  Now, I had plenty of chums in school who were of all kinds of mixed races, and yes, some of them where Asian.  Most of *them* were from my mathematics course (Calc), which were ~50% Asian in a school where the Asian population was *maybe* 10%.  How’s that for stereotyping?  Am I a racist now for stating what is *true*?  I’ve dated Asians, etc.  I don’t say this to ‘prove’ I’m not a racist, but to demonstrate the fact that I can and do get along with ANY people AS people on ANY level, regardless of skin color, religion, etc. >and as such, he is not racist.

No, I don’t believe he is.  Again, stating that one has friends of different races does not imply anything other than that they *can* and *do* get along with *people* regardless of where they’re from, etc.  I was once accused of being ‘racist’ because, when an Irish person was hired, I stated, in jest, that that was good and that we needed more Irish people around there.  When a Jewish person, much like yourself, called me on that by stating sarcastically that that was "a great reason to hire someone", I replied with the only defense I had which was that of the positions *I* hired people for, they consisted of a 22yo Hispanic female who was very short, a very tall 26yo black male, a very tall and buxom 31yo black female, and an overweight 40yo white Jewish female.  This was greeted, much like you greeted the comments above, with a hand in face attitude, and further implications of racism.  These things are NOT said to prove that one is not a racist, but that one has proven in the past that they have no propensities towards racism of any kind.  Try to get that through your skull, okay? >Get some breeding:

And then YOU turn around and make a racial comment.  Just how stupid are you? >If you don’t like me, make jokes about *me* – DON’T generalise an entire ethinic >group just because you don’t like one person.

The joke was not about an entire ethnic group, it was about the singular people within a range of ethnic groups.  Or, are you no going to tell me that Asian people are not of different ethnicities and that some of these people also have racist attitudes towards other Asians? >I’d like to see you crack jokes about Asian eating dogs to your ‘Asian’

friends I’ve done it regularly, and they call me a drunken Mc, so? >and call your ‘African-American’ friends ‘nigger’.

Puh-lease.  Between friends, nowadays, no matter what races they are, kids call each other "nigger".  Of course, this is a far cry from being a generalized joke based upon stereotypes, if not done between friends, it can, indeed, when directed at an unknown individual, be construed as a racist comment, whether it was or not. >My guess is, you really don’t >have many friends to begin with

Now, here, after denying that some Asians do eat dog meat, you admit that it is a possibility?  Then, you go on and say, "you’ld like to think they are anomalies"?  What you like and what is reality, once again, may not jibe.  In Viet Nam, Cambodia, etc., there are plenty of poor, rural areas where dog is, if not a staple, at least a semi-regular source of sustenance.  A gross generalization would be to say ALL Chinese people eat dogs, not that Chinese people eat dogs.  It’s not surprising that you can’t tell the difference.  You may find it offensive, but that’s of little to no concern, since you yourself have displayed racist attitudes in this post. >And with this, Mr. Russo, you go in my killfile.

I knew it was coming.  Good god what a ‘tard.  More cement poured into her ears, eh? > I don’t believe in trying to >change people’s minds – and arguing about racism with someone such as yourself >is a waste of my time.

Well, you already know what plenty of people here think of YOU.  I’ve said it before, in many situations, when the entire world is ‘against’ you, what are the chances that you’re right? Kieron Dodds Welcome to the killfile party, Anthony.

Response:

Let me guess: You think just because I am telling you such jokes are offensive, that I’m not "Asian enough," and so I can’t be proud to be an Asian, and yet, I’m "superior." No, Mr. Russo: I am superior because I *do not* make racist jokes on Usenet. I *do not* stomp around with pride and continued ignorance when someone from an ethnic group other than my own tells me what I assumed of them was erroneous. I *do not* get sensitive and belligerent and tell a person he’s being ‘too sensitive’ when he tells me I’m not funny. Mind, this was the person who claimed he was "sorry" for posting the original "joke." I suppose he thinks just because he knows one or two Asian people, that he has ‘many’ Asian friends, and as such, he is not racist. Get some breeding: If you don’t like me, make jokes about *me* – DON’T generalise an entire ethinic group just because you don’t like one person. I’d like to see you crack jokes about Asian eating dogs to your ‘Asian’ friends and call your ‘African-American’ friends ‘nigger’. My guess is, you really don’t have many friends to begin with – and if you do tell them such jokes, you’ll have even fewer left. I am going to go ahead and paste *my* original post here so nobody with an ounce of sense can twist my words.

I find jokes about eating dog meat extremely offensive. In fact, I was involved in one thread in the rec.pets.dogs.breeds groups (newsgroups added to this) that turned out to be one such joke. * I am a dog lover, and I have two dogs now. Growing up, I had three. * I am a member of the "Far Eastern" society that apparently eats dogs – in fact, eats anything that breathes. * I know of certain individuals in said society that *do* eat dogs: – Certain Chinese families keep dogs and eat dogs in Malaysia because they know it offends the Muslims. In fact, some Chinese have been known to feed the unsuspecting Muslim dog meat, much like some jerks tried to do to the Somalis. – Certain individuals believe that dog meat, like tiger, can enhance their fertility and / or sexual powers. =>  those certain individuals are supersititous and prejudiced, and because they are *individuals* and I’d like to think they are anomalies in said society. When other individuals make jokes about "the Chinese/Vietnamese" eating dogs, they are making gross generalisations based on hearsay. That is repugnant to me, and yes, it is *very* offensive. – Michelle And with this, Mr. Russo, you go in my killfile. I don’t believe in trying to change people’s minds – and arguing about racism with someone such as yourself is a waste of my time. But, please, do feel free to carry on as you have. I’m sure your circle of admirers will improve tremendously, and you might even persuade yourself that they are your "friends." I wonder what they think of you? – Michelle – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> Let me say this slowly so everyone understands: I am Asian, and I find > dog-eating jokes offensive. Bullshit.  If I said no Irish people drink, that doesn’t mean *that’s* true.  If a black man says no black people eat soul food, that doesn’t mean *that’s* true.  If a Jewish man says all Jewish people eat pork, etc., etc.  Some asians *do* continue to eat dogs.  However, they *do* distinguish between their pets and their ‘livestock’.  Granted, if you’re not from the rural areas of the particular countries where this occurs, the only way you’ld know about it is from watching PBS regularly. >I’m flattered that you think so much of me that you kept my emails.  I >deleted >yours.  I did, however, receive an email from you first.  Had I not >received >mail from "scritto" (whatever the hell that is) in the first place, I would >not >have emailed back.  By the way, how insecure are you that you need >three f*&$#ing email addresses??!! >Why I do what I do is none of your business. Response:

Let me say this sssllllloooowwwwllllyyyy so you understand.  I am Irish.  I do not take offense when people mention Irish tempers or their drinking habits.  Why?  Because it’s true for some Irish people.  I’m the only one in my extended family who doesn’t drink at all, and I know more than a few Irish people I would classify as alcoholics.  So, denying that some asians *do* eat dogs (mostly rural areas) really accomplishes nothing other than to make you look ashamed of your own heritage.  I’m not saying that you should be *proud* of something like this, no more than if I were to relocate to India and five generations down should my descendants be proud of eating cows.  Or to an Arabic land and be proud of eating pig for that matter. — Kieron Dodds – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->Let me say this slowly so everyone understands: I am Asian, and I find >dog-eating jokes offensive. I don’t care that you’re Asian.  I have a lot of friends who are also.  As I also have a lot of friends of European and African descent.  They’re all great people. In fact, you sound as if you are superior because you are Asian, which, of course is untrue ( as it would be for any regional makeup). Being Asian, you should be able to admit that *some* Asians do eat dogs. ("Let me say this slowly so" you understand: Just like *some* Americans eat cows) Why can’t you even admit that?  You’re defending the idea that *all* Asians don’t eat dogs–a concept which is untrue.  It’s as if I, as an American, would proclaim that *all* Americans don’t eat cows.  Hey, it happens! Cultures find other cultures interesting, sometimes humerous.  Why do the Japanese enjoy the time period and culture of the Old American West so much?  Who knows, but in Japan it’s a popular cultural theme, they may even find some of it humerous. In America, some find the idea of consuming what we consider a pet as interesting, and yes, sometimes humerous. It’s all in the perception. So…while you should be proud to be Asian, as I am proud to be American (notice that up to now I didn’t mention my Italian heritage) you should ease up and not be so critical of people who find some Asian, European or American, etc. cultural curiousities (of past or present times) just that: ‘curious’ It’s not *racist*.  However, your tones of Asianic supremacy are. Well, gee, I guess somebody told you a joke you took too seriously, then. When a person tells you eating dog-meat will create or improve your fertility, IT’S A JOKE. Now, why did you respond in kind? >I think you are a humorless coward who can only deal >with issues in a one-sided fashion. >DO NOT EMAIL BACK TO SCRITTO.  TO DO SO MAY >GET YOU KICKED OFF YOUR ISP. >–Anthony Russo, "scrittohater"

have tried to e-mail me *four* times after I told you to quit. Get a life. Maybe your sperm count will improve if you stayed away from the radiation your computer emits. – Michelle

Scritto, If you know that people are joking, why do you respond? How stupid are you that you repeatedly fall for the same joke? Also, why do you send someone a personal email and then cry like a little girl when they reply back to the originating address just because you stated ‘do not write back’? They were only responding in kind. Just because you may not find it funny doesn’t mean you have to police the posts for those who may otherwise find it amusing.  Not everyone *lacks* a sense of humor. I think you are a humorless coward who can only deal with issues in a one-sided fashion. DO NOT EMAIL BACK TO SCRITTO.  TO DO SO MAY GET YOU KICKED OFF YOUR ISP. –Anthony Russo, "scrittohater"
