Centre to help needy heart patients: Thakur Monday, April 8, 2002 The government would help poor patients who were unable to bear the expenses of open-heart surgery and angioplasty, Union Health Minister C P Thakur said in Patna on Monday. "The needy patients could avail themselves of monetary benefit from the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund, Union health minister’s discretionary fund and National Illness Fund," Thakur said. While inaugurating a cardiology workshop in Patna, he appealed to doctors to create awareness about the prevention and cure of cardiac diseases. He said nearly 50 million people in the country were suffering from coronary artery diseases. Of them, only 20 million could afford the cost of an open-heart surgery. Forty per cent of all cardiac diseases were due to rheumatic fever, which could be prevented by early detection, he said.
