young optimism

Question:

About 2 months ago my company laid off all employees.  I was an Advertising Manager with Internet Marketing skills and knowledge.  With the internet still being a new concept and most business are still hiring web designers to wear both hats as designer and marketer, I was having tremendously difficult time finding work.  So, since I believe everything happens for a reason [the always alive optimist in me], I took the time between interviews and put my knowledge on a site offering the how-tos for free.  In turn, this site aided in my getting a job as a marketing consultant for CBS Sportsline. My advice: Believe that there’s a company out there that wants you and your talents.  Don’t get depressed and put your available time to use.  And if you’d like a boost in spirit, visit my other site ‘Celebrate Life – A Website for the Living’ located at http://www.gate.net/~markhell/celeblfe.html Best Wishes in your Career Search! Great Advice! I recently faced a personal and business challenge that left me somewhat battered and bruised, but definitely not defeated. In addition to not letting depression get the best of you, I would like to add that when searching for a job (or anything else in life for that matter), one should relax as much as possible.  By doing so you become aware of talents and assets you may not have even been aware of.  And often the "right job" will come along effortlessly. Let me offer you some optimistic advice. i) there are jobs out there for most people with skills and flexibility (I’m sure you have both), ii)most people spend longer than necessary on job hunting because they don’t know how to do it (it’s not properly taught in school). iii)There is a primer on effective job searching on our web site www.marketing4technology.com in the library (its 9 pages to long – I just couldn’t edit it down anymore – and it still just scratches the surface, also it doesn’t effectively cover interviewing). Read it, follow it, if you want more detail pick up What Color is your Parachute and a good book on interviewing Good luck — Afam Edozie Tel: +44 181 201 8055 Mobile: +44 802 663 669 www.marketing4technology.com Your soul is often times a battlefield, upon which your reason and  your judgement wage war against your passion and Kahlil Gibran

I know the feeling. I too am a post grad student, specialising in interactive marketing. All I know that where I am, I tried with out much luck for 6 months to get a position, so returned to study. I can only hope that things get a bit more positive this time around. On top of this I am hoping to move to the US next year. So I can’t increase your optimism one little bit; but hey, maybe someone can come along and say something positive to both of us :o ) Michael Grantham
