Why Don't Piercing Stores Stock any Large Gauge

Question:

In central California if you want 4 to 12 gage barbells you’ve got to go mail order or order from the store…. you can’t just walk in anonymously and say.  got a short 8 or 6 gage with small then normal end balls… you have to go to gauntlet in SF or LA…. even there you must remind them that they might have it in one of those little drawers behind the counter… LARGE GAUGERS UNITE!   I can’t imagine living in flyover country (RL) and wanting to check some out.

That’s unfortunate.  I don’t even pierce full time and I keep 10ga barbells in stock in 1/16" increments. —                                 * Ardvark *                               Anne Greenblatt                   Piercing FAQ Manager for rec.arts.bodyart                              Piercing Exquisite                       http://www2.ba.best.com/~ardvark

… Gauntlet (SF) carries larger guages? They’ve never had in stock anything over 12 guage I wanted, although the smaller Body Manipulations store often has them in stock. I’ve gotten 4 ga. and 2 ga. items from them (and they’re nice folks to do business with).

What a drag!  Here in Chicago, all of the shops I frequent have just about every large guage ring you could want.  Same goes for the shops in NYC I like to visit.   laura

Guess it depends on the establishment you frequent. I live in a fairly small city <45,000> and the shop I go to has up to 2 gauge in stock . Lucky me I guess !    Base

Yeah, lucky you ;) . I go to a store where i am  (actually, I go to three, and eventually I find what I need) anyway, the one I was at this evening (for an 8g) had two 6g in stock, no 8g, and a million 10g’s…go figure. daidai

There are good mail order companies, most can have your jewelry out to you in 2 days, and they are often cheaper than piercing stores.

Yes…. mailorder is definitely the way I go, especially since a lot of the piercing studios here carry jewelry of questionable quality, and I know that if I order it, I will be able to get it in the gauge and size that I want it, Especially if its something that’s a bit uncommon (Like a 4ga 1/2" ring).   Granted, you have to wait a bit longer (less if you pay for fedex or what have you), but its less hit-n-miss as it is with going to even the most well-stocked studios. -nick www.hockey.net/~obscure * Rev. Larger gauges usually cost quite a bit more.  Most average piercees probably don’t get much bigger than 12ga for facial jewelry or 6ga for body jewelry, (not counting size queens here) so there’s no justification for having a huge stock of big stuff, unless you are really selling a lot of it.  Plus most of the people who have stretched that far are of the patient type to begin with and wouldn’t mind waiting a few days for it to be ordered. —- If you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the precipitate.    |     ~o~o~o~o~o~o~        Semaj the $piceman         ~o~o~o~o~o~o~    |    | "Follow me into the desert, as thirsty as you are…" — Soundgarden |
