A co-worker who worked for Ford until a week ago said the exact same thing. He saw a heavily instrumented Mustang parked at a little leauge ball park a a few months ago, which was driven by a Ford engineer for evaluation purposes (both were there for their sons’ ballgames). It had a modular V8, and the engineer told my co-worker that the new motor is slated for the 96 Mustang. Tom Mathes | I don’t know much about the tariff, but Unitrode I.C. Corp. | I know this much. A friend who is an engineer at Ford told me that the problem is not an over supply of 302’s but an undersupply of the new modular V8. Obviously if Ford can not produce enough the ones they do produce will go into their higher dollar cars because the profit is greater. Joe

Or maybe the Lincoln engine is not in the Mustang because it was thought that the Mustang ought to cost less than the Lincoln. I’m sure that the 302 in the Mustang and the 350 in the Camaro are much cheaper to produce than an overhead-cam engine. Why not a 351 in the Mustang? Either the volume would be so low that the certification and development costs would never be recovered, or the volume would be so high that CAFE would suffer. Now that the Mustang is one of the top 10 nameplates, I imagine that more money is being spent. The volume of V8 Mustangs is still, I’m sure, much less than that of F-series trucks using the same block, so the "warehouse of 302 blocks" doesn’t exist. — -Stephen H. It depends on when they use up the stock piles of 302 blocks..which is about the only reason they put the lame thing in anyway…I’m sure they are dying to give the ‘Stang the power it deserves but they probably have a warehouse of 302 blocks they want to use up first. — "Autocrossers go in deeper and come out harder" 1991 Spirit R/T-G Stock B.S. I’ve also heard ‘96 with the biggest problem right now that Ford can’t produce all they need. This means that the bigger (ie more expensive / greater profit) cars will be getting the modular. Joe
