This is a great website for my purposes, thanks for the link. I am also somewhat redfaced, I just talked to Air Canada and they informed me that the maximum mileage on my ticket is 29,000 as Richard has stated. I will never know whether the agent who took my reservation in May made a mistake or whether I misunderstood. My apologies to the group for posting inaccurate information. In a way I am relieved, because I will need another RTW ticket next spring and that will undoubtedlly require more than 20,000 miles. Regards, Tilmann.

Response:

Just to give you a wild idea, I flew RTW on Star Alliance in April, 2000. Oslo-Texas-San Francisco-Tokyo-Singapore-Bangkok-Frankfort-Oslo The ticket cost about NOK30,000 or near USD3300.

The "lite" fare may only be available in certain locations (ie: Australia) – it is essentially a leisure version and seasonal with less miles and more restrictions on it. >I find that quite expensive considering i’m getting 2 stop one way from LHR >to SYD on United for US$750 (total miles around 14750 pity I’m not doing it >rtn so I can get the premier status LOL) & have seen them advertiseed here >in the UK for US$975. Not sure on the t&c’s tho for that.

cheap! Very cheap….. >Website http://www.star-alliance.com/ looking on there says maximum >stopovers is 15 & miles travelled is 39000 on any of the airlines that are >alligned

that is a STAR3 fare, not a STAR1 which is the 29,000 fare. >Skippy

hey glad to know you were thinking the same thing I was, but according to Tilmann it was/is a CRWSTAR1 fare, so should be the 29,000 one (business) IIRC. weird unless AC are being anal or they gave tilmann the wrong info on the fare type. >Although some of the rules vary from country of purchase, >the basics are *always* the same – the four different >mileage limits for example.

that’s what I thought… >Cheers. Al.

When bought in oz at least it is a very inexpensive fare for the numbers of options you can do with it. I am just finalising the details on a 9 stop stopping-all-stations fare for my brother to do such places as Delhi, Tel Aviv, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Bali, Vienna, Frankfurt, Vancouver & LA…. not too bad for the price considering segment fares… >Cheers, >Jon

There are 4 star alliace RTW fares: Lite: 26,000 miles Star1: 29,000 Star2: 34,000 Star3: 39,000 These are upper limits. You can find out how much your particular itin is by adding up the segment mileage(most web engines now include mileage figures) which will give you an approximate figure. Note though that these may vary from the IATA or whatever it is (I keep forgetting!) mileage figures for city pairs (which I think are based on city locations, and not airports) by a few miles either way, but it will give you a rough guide. Alternatively ask your travel agent to work it out :-) >Thanks a lot.

Richard, I think your unformation is incomplete. I have an RTW ticket issued by AC with a limit of 20,000 miles. UA offered  29000 miles as the lowest limit in May. I think, that different airlines offer different tiers and – I might add – fares. Not just the fares, Tilman, the rules of the fare also vary pending country of purchase !!  It’s one very useful and very liberal RTW fare, but it’s a pain in the proverbial to do changes to when it was sold in another country !! There are the four Star RTW fares as Richard mentioned – maybe the Starlite is not offered in your country of purchase. The 20,000 mile limit on that AC ticket you were talking about may be for a different RTW fare. Although some of the rules vary from country of purchase, the basics are *always* the same – the four different mileage limits for example. Cheers. Al.

The air fare code is CRWSTAR1 so I assume (and was told) that it is a Star RTW fare. What can I say? UA did not even offer the 26000 miles tier when I called in May. I guess it just supports the impression that it is difficult to figure the rationale underlying air fares! Cheers, Tilmann Tilmann

Response:

Hi. The fares for the Star Alliance round-the-world options vary depending on the total mileage of the itinerary. Does anyone know where you can find out how many miles there are in a particular itinerary? Thanks a lot.

Response:

Go to any of the online travel sites (www.expedia.com, www.travelocity.com), for each segment of your intended itinerary put in the origin and destination city and click "find flights", "search", etc. When the possible flights appear, select one of the choices and click "details" and it will dispay the mileage for that segment. Do this for each segment and add them all up to get your total mileage. Mike

Call the airline and ask. As far as I know, only the total mileage matters, not the itinerary. I don’t know where you live, so I do not know which airline you should call. I have usd UAL and Air Canada, in both cases the reservation aagents at the airline were very helpful and polite. By the way, the fares seem to depend on the country, from where you start the RTW. Enjoy, TIlmann
