Hello everyone, I am new to the group and was wondering if you could help with a few things. 1) I am working on pitching a BBQ sauce company and would like to get "smart" n the industry. Does anyone have any sources or ideas this industry? 2) I am also working on pitching a sports team. Does anyone have any information on sports marketing or where I could look? Thanks

J.Roy: Question number one. The best way of getting the needed information to pitch to a BBQ sauce company [or any company for that matter], in my opinion, would be to obtain that particular companies literature. Go to their website [if they have one], get last year’s annual report and any other available literature. The more you know about their company, the better you’ll pitch your product/service. For industry related information, head to your local library, an online library, check out online competitor sites for that particular company, etc… Question number two. "pitching a sports team" no pun intended…*smile*… With sports, you have to go through a lot of people [to my understanding] to get to the man/woman of command. It’s best to research the team and how they "play ball" behind the scenes. Find out through, non solicited phone calls, to the team’s headquarters answers to your questions…such as, who would I need to talk to. Also, I work fulll time for CBS Sportsline [marketing coordinator - having nothing to do with the teams] and I know they have sports career pages among other things. Going thru the site for industry information [I, of course, won't suggest our competitor's pages...es[xx] or cn[xxxx] pages *smile*] and see what you can grab there. Go to the supermarket! See their competitors, the packaging, offers, pricing, who gives recipe books away etc. Is the market for outside cooking or adding flavour inside. Check out all the BBQ offerings? Is the wood hickory? How much do things cost etc. This will give an idea of strengths and weaknesses and help you think up new ways of increasing the client’s business. You can then sell this ability, if the client actually wants the bother of having their business increased. >Question number two. Especially find out where their money is really coming from. You might be pitching a merchandising company, driven by sales of replica sportsware, mugs, bedding etc. Also see if you can discover what their problems are. Going to a match might help.
