Shop front or office?
Question:
>I will be moving from my home office to a proper office shortly. >However, I’ve been wondering if i should actually go for a shop front. >I run a computer consultancy and I’ve been wondering if the free >advertising of your shop front could outweigh the extra cost,
Depends on the location and the cost.. We made a move to a new retail location back in Aug. 97. Cost between a low traffic and a higher traffic<walking> area was around 400.00 a month. We’ve been pleased with the higher traffic location. We have around 1000+ professional/business owners/high income/etc types that see the front of our store daily. Our walk in traffic is up about $2,000.00 a day based on the location and store window banners alone<we track where people heard about us<TV Ad, newspaper ad, direct mail, billboard(low response), personal referal, banner, etc>. While we don’t rely on just that for local business it is a nice addition. Hi Jon A "proper" office inplies working from home is not. How do you know this is true? Did you know some of the most successful consultants work from home? People should never spend money in any type of business (no matter how large) unless and until they can fully justify that expenditure Now, shop fronts are mainly for retail sales, where the marketing strategy is the "open door", which won’t be much use to you. Why not stay at home, and use the money saved on the shop to get more clients? You next step should be to visit www.au.com/dabrio for lots of worthwhile free information for computer consultants on how to succeed. I’ve looked at this site, and I’m impressed! Remember to figure in the risk of crime and possible higher insurance and security costs. All those lovely computers on show might trigger a string of break ins. This would also impact the business generally. Balanced against this seeing what is goin on in a business makes it less threatening and more inviting. In the video rental industry, the small guys (struggling) plaster their windows with posters, hiding the inside. The chains (growing) have clear windows with the odd poster. And some of these can be very odd posters with little to do with the movie they are promoting…. (remember Barbwire?)

Maybe this explains it: There was a phase where I was getting videotape blurb and lines to write. It was weird, one had to capture the essence of a film having only read a couple of paragraphs of synopsis. I didn’t get to see the films! A favourite was: Innocence is bliss. Knowledge is terror. Sounds like every review written of Barbwire – are you SURE you didn’t write the reviews too?

Moving from your home office has its advantages and disadvantages depending on what is currently going on with your customer base. Do you customers meet in your home? If so, you want to make sure that the location you choose is centrally located to reach your target market, has adequate parking facilities, convenient to get to, well lit, secure, and appealing to the eye. Another thing, be sure you will be comfortable in this location. Lastly, determine the quality of police & fire protection as well as the adequacy of utilities.
