Makeovers… ranting

My TV is switched on basically 24/7, not that I actually watch it that much; it’s more of a background. I’ve managed to watch a few makeover shows: Ricki Lake and Jenny Jones to be specific. I wonder what the hell is wrong with people?! Families and relatives are dragging 13-16 year olds (mostly goths) on International TV to slag them off! Sure, some of them look pretty cluttered and trashy. But how many teens actually look totally co-ordinated, elegant and sophisticated? Soooo, the makeovers usually result in some generic khaki/colourful outfit made of cotton and viscose/polyester. You think the kids would actually wear that stuff the next day? If the makeovers were actually supposed to work for the kids in the long run, they should start with what’s already there, sort of. Clean up their style. If the kids dress in "trashy" black then give them a more elegant look in black. The hair doesn’t have to be a smooth bob to be elegant! "Invisible" make up can be nice, but why not give them a blackish/greyish/darkish make up that actually looks good? But then again, these shows aren’t about giving these kids a serious alternative, it’s about cloning them into generic everyday people. Not that there’s anything wrong with "ordinary", I look pretty ordinary most of the time. I’m old enough to have outgrown my heyday. =)~ For these kids though: YUCK!! Teens often experiment with their appearance and their relatives should realize that! They might squirm when they see their "freaky" kids, but HEY! it’ll pass; the kids might not ever become preppy but they probably will clean up sort of. Instead of giving the kids makeovers they should teach the families about teenagers, rebellion and such things. But that wouldn’t make entertaining TV… The comments from audience and families are also downright stupid most of the time: how many 14-year olds are considering a carrer for instance?? Telling a teen they have to clean up to get a carrer is so dumb! By the time they get through college they might’ve changed their appearance totally!
