JFK to port for NCL Dawn 11/28 or 12/9 cruise ?

Question:

Try calling one of the "black cabs" (Limos) like Tel Aviv and ask their rates. (1 800 222 8888).  Also check the Newark Airport web site. (http://www.panynj.gov/aviation/ewrframe.HTM) for taxi rates to NY (it now shows $45. to the area of the port).  Plus tip and $6.00 tolls (you pay round trip).  From JFK to the west side of Manhattan will only be a few dollars less (we recently had a horrendous taxi fare  increase in NY).

Response:

Yes and no.  It’s more expensive when coming from New Jersey, but not from the airport.  Special rates to Port Authority facilities in Jersey. From the airport to Manhattan: New York City / Manhattan Conveying one (1) or more passengers to any one point in New York City, Excluding Tolls.         Battery — West 58th Street…..$40.00         West 35th Street — West 58th Street…..$45.00         West 59th Street — West 109th Street…..$50.00         West 110th Street — West 185th Street…..$55.00         Above 185th Street…..$60.00         LaGuardia Airport…..$65.00         J.F.K. Int’l. Airport…..$75.00         From New York to the airport is the meter plus $15 plus tolls         If it’s in Jersey but not the airport, then it’s whatever you and the driver agree to before the trip starts.   Doubling happens for Westchester and Nassau counties, it’s the meter to the border of New York City, then double the meter for the rest of the trip plus any tolls.

That’s why I used "If". I didn’t know who is currently using the Bayonne facility. I do know that there is a cruise I’m contemplating on NCL in Oct ‘05 that leaves from there.

Response:

NCL does not have a shuttle to JFK only the other two NY area airports. Go Figure. I posted above I would look into a car/van service. You will need two cabs for your group. Best advice arrive a day early. If you drive you can stay an hour or so outside the city and find a hotel that will not empty your wallet. Quick trip to the ship in the AM. Parking is available at the pier http://www.nypst.com/  and since it is on the west side it is easy to find and you don’t have to wander the streets of NY to get there. The other option is a train. A group who joined us last winter on the dawn did that from upstate NY. Started the party as son as they boarded the train. $10 cab from Grand Central Station. Not sure what the rail service is like from VT anymore. I moved out of the state 25 years ago but still miss it.

You need to allow AT least an hour for the transfer and yes,  NCL should be running a shuttle.  You need to verify this however.  But a cab is easy to get and probably the most time effecient. No way to predict the weather.   ON ANY flight you may consider- be certain you take the first one out and that there are AT least 2 more that would get you there in time if you go the same day. Jet Blue is a big risk as they have no interline agreements and few flights. http://www.panynj.gov/

I would definitely fly into NYC a day (or even two days) before the cruise, if your schedule allows. While most of the snow does come after Jan. 1, we can usually count on a good "winter mix" event in December. NY metro area is prone to lovely ice storms which are probably even worse than snow for travel. And, it’s not  like there’s not a ton of stuff to do in NYC, especially that time of year. Maybe one night your folks can babysit while you and your wife take in a great dinner and show, your parents can do the same the following night! As far as getting from JFK to the ship, I agree with another poster that a cab will be a tight squeeze for the 5 of you plus luggage. I’d look into a town car service (or small van) booked in advance, that will pick you up right at the terminal and drop you off, wherever you need to go (hotel if you come in early, ship if you come in same day). We’ve used these folks in the past: http://www.babestaxi.com/.They’re based in NJ, but they definitely transport passengers into NYC. You’ll have to call to find out if they’ll do the JFK to Manhattan thing. Here’s another company to try http://airbrook.com/. They’ve been around forever, and have a variety of vehicle types so I’m sure they’d be able to accomodate you. Lee

The current rate for taxi service from Kennedy Airport to one stop in Manhattan is $45 + tolls ($4 for Midtown Tunnell or Battery Tunnel; all other crossings free) + optional tip. If you request multiple stops in Manhattan, the meter gets turned on after the first stop and gets added to the original $45. However, I don’t know if you’ll be able to get 4 adults plus a child seat plus a week’s worth of luggage for same into a standard NYC taxi. You might do better with making advance reservations with one of the local car service companies here in NY – the cost will be higher, but they will meet you at the luggage carousel, have the car right in front of the terminal and not try to cheat you. If NCL is leaving out of the new terminal in Bayonne, you definitely want to go with the car service option, since NYC cabbies despise go into NJ. Sorry I can’t be more help, but I drive NYC subway trains and don’t use cabs/car services much.

Hi Diane, Not being from your area I may be mistaken but isn’t a taxi much more expensive from the Newark airport?  It seems like they double the rate or something similar when coming from NJ.  I realize there are alternatives to taxis but they might not be as convenient with luggage, family, etc. Best regards, Ray LIGHTHOUSE TRAVEL 800-719-9917 or 805-566-3905 http://www.lighthousetravel.com
