Five Shortest Flights
Question:
> 4. Houston IAH – HOU. >CO schedules this as a 22 minute flight, on Embraer and ATR props.
CO no longer operates any flights out of Hobby (HOU), thus, this service no longer exists. However, they do fly IAH to EFD (Ellington Field–the former AFB near Johnson Space Center). Scheduled time is 23 min, on Ebmraers and ATRs. Also, both Delta and USAir have jet service between San Antonio & Austin (on 727s and 737s)–71 miles in 30 minutes (southbound) or 31 minutes (northbound). Conquest (5C) does this route in Fairchild Metroliners, and list the time as 28 minutes each way. –Alan Stephens LAN Server Ultimedia Development IBM Personal Software Products, Austin I don’t speak for IBM, and, believe me, IBM *certainly* doesn’t speak for me!
Response:
Unfortunately I don’t have a timetable with me to give the current schedule, but the shortest scheduled flight used to be (and probably still is) Loganair (AKA BA Express nowadays) Westray to Papa Westray. Scheduled time 2 minutes, less than one with a favourable wind. — Graham Allan, Engineering Services | Spider Software, Project Leader | Stanwell Street, Telephone (+44) (0)31 555 5166 /oo/ Scotland.

: I’ve flown HNL-OGG numerous times – them being on two different islands : and me not being a good swimmer, I’m glad the service is offered. I : remember the cost as varying from $30-$170 each way, depending on : seasonality, time of day, advance purchase, and just plain luck. I : believe it’s one of the busiest markets. AQ (Aloha) and HA (Hawaiian) : have flights as often as every 15 min at peak times of the day (737’s : for Aloha and DC9’s for Hawaiian) Actually, I flew the Kingston, Jamaica -> Montego Bay hop once when I went down there on holiday on a scheduled Air Jamaica flight. The flight was about 17 minutes at 12,000 feet in a 727 (well, thats what the pilot said) Gorgeous island from the air, too! Kinda dark green

I’d guess that SJC-SFO is there for connection to flights unavailable from one or the other – that is, if I leave my car at one place or another but have to get come back to the other airport, I can connect to a flight to my trip origin. The schedules for Continental show this to be a 22 minute flight. Are we talking scheduled times or actual flight times for this thread? Ric

I dunno but Miami to Ft. Lauderdale on Delta has to be in there at 21 miles. There’s one flight a day (it’s used to move a plane). As a follow-up to the Howie/Ashcroft entries, I seem to remember that the shortest (Scottish) flight is between the two Islands Westray and Papa Westray. This was probably with twin Islander aircraft and was operated by Loganair. I think I remember reading somewhere that special regulations were required to permit the crew to make zillions of take offs and landings each day.

Fort Collins to Denver is pretty short, ~10-15 minutes. -Kartik
Response:
Unless they have quit flying it, the shortest regularly scheduled Jet flight was from Wrangle to Petersburg Alaska. Two minutes at about 1000 feet. The alternative was a 2+ hour ferry boat trip. Great fun the day I took the flight because Petersburg was celebrating their anniversary, and the townspeople "highjacked" the plane – came on board and gave everyone still on board a glass of beer (I presume excluding the flight crew).

: We now know what the five longest flights are. How about the world’s five : shortest scheduled flights? : I can think of one possibility: Tahiti – Moorea – 10 minutes ? There was something in the Guiness Book of World Records about that. It said that the shortest regularly scheduled JET flight is from San Fransico to Oakland. (Does anybody know if an airline still flies that?). It said that the shortest regularly scheduled flight is between two islands off of Britan. It said that once when the wind was blowing the right way it took less than one minute. -Stephan Piel

Well, the shortest flight I can think of within the U.S. is between Martha’s Vineyard (MVY) and Nantucket (ACK), on a Cape Air Cessna. It takes 15 min. — | —-+ Cruising at an altitude of 96 stories… -|–+ / /| George Feil, Sumitomo Bank Capital Markets | ||| || PGP public key available on request

Is this route still in existance? I seem to recall it being discontinued when I lived in the Bay Area. (~1991) For short flights I nominate COS-DEN. 17 minutes of the bumpiest air imaginable. UA uses a 737 for this several times a day, as does CO, but they are about to drop this route if they haven’t already. — SunSoft, Inc. The standard one in the Guiness Book, for a long time anyway, was a flight in the Shetlands or Orkney Islands that only lasted a minute or so, by Loganair. I’ve flown very short flights by Loganair in the Shetlands, but I don’t think I was on the shortest one. RNA

A number of years ago, I did a 727/737 flight from Washington National Airport to Dulles International Airport — probably about 35 miles at most. (This peculiarity was to allow the carrier to fly a transcontinental haul out of National, which wasn’t then — and isn’t now — allowed.)

I’ve got at least 5 15 minute flights on Canadian’s connector airlines (Inter-Canadian – in northern Quebec) (Calm Air – in northern Manitoba and in NWT). For what it’s worth, the Vancouver – Victoria flight time is 25 minutes (17 times daily each way) and the Vancouver-Nanaimo flight time is 20 minutes (9 flights daily).
