Cheap Travel! Discussion

Question:

Ray Goldenberg wrote under the subject Re: Cheap Travel regarding Agent I.D Scams or, The Instant Travel Agent. I would like to respond to this "attack" on two fronts.  I am an agent with Nu-Concepts in travel.  I am a frequent traveler who has had several bad experiences with travel agents, most of whom have travelled less than I.  After booking several successful trips myself I heard about becoming an "outside agent".  It made sense to me to be able to get part of the commission back in return for doing most of the work.  I also certainly liked the idea of getting travel agent discounts and have successfully done that on several occasions.  No one has yet asked if I was a "fully accredited I.A.T.A.N. travel consultant".  I know that "real" travel agents often get bigger discounts from certain suppliers that they refer their customers to on a regular basis whether or not that company is the right one for their customer!  I think it’s a conflict of interest to do business in that way.  The last agent I used refused to book me with Southwest airlines because of their low commissions.  I had to call myself and always got a lower fare than my agent’s "best" fare.  I figure the discounts I receive are part of the perks of being a frequent traveler.  Also I do book some travel for friends and family. My second objection is to the allegations of these being a "pyramid scheme". There is a multi-level marketing aspect of Nu-concepts in travel but you are not required to "recruit" others.  But why wouldn’t you want to refer others to something that you think is a good deal?  Word of mouth is the  best advertising there is.  When I find a great product or service why shouldn’t I earn something for referring others to it?  What exactly is a pyramid scheme?  MLM is a pyramid but whether or not it is illegal is another matter.  The pyramid is the most common organizational structure in the world. Within most companies there is a hierarchy of presidents, vice-presidents, managers and workers.  It is not the form that determines it’s legality or legitimacy, it is the function that is the determining factor. In MLM it is not a new way to make money but rather a way to distribute the marketing dollars.  Multi-level marketing describes a function.  Products or services are being marketed through multiple levels.  There are pyramid schemes and scams just like there are other business schemes and scams.  Anyone who does not research their company and gets scammed, deserves it. Spoken like a true believer.  Without people like you, concepts like "Nu-Concepts in Travel" wouldn’t exist. If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck…….well, you know the rest.
