Career in Marketing, Any Advice?
Question:
I have worked as a garbage man for the last six years while going to college pursuing my masters in Markting Management. Anyone have any advice or suggestions to help me make the transition from blue collar garbage man to white collar Marketing consultant? Thanks!

A couple things off the top of my head: 1) Get hired by your garbage company in their marketing/advertising/public relations department. Send out resumes to other garbage companies. You’ve got experience in that industry. Why not put it to use to get your first job? If you hate the garbage industry, still do it for two years then move to another industry. The two years as a garbage company’s marketer will be viewed as two years as simply a marketer by other companies. Stepping stone approach that might be able to capitalize on your current work experience. 2) Simply realize that you’ll need to start at the bottom of this new industry and take whatever marketing job you can get. Try to get as good of a job as you can, but don’t hold out forever for the ideal job … especially one normally given to one with at least a few years of marketing experience under their belt. Book knowledge only takes you so far. You need work experience. 3) Start attending the meetings of local business associations. Whip up some business cards to hand out. Network. If you do Suggestion #1, do likewise with garbage collection associations and their conventions. Good luck! Scott Jensen — Like a cure for A.I.D.S, Alzheimer, Parkinson, & Mad Cow Disease?
